Uric Acid Levels Rising

(Rsahadi1975) #1

I’ve been keto for 2 months now. Three months ago before keto, my Uric Acid level was 5. Now it is at 9. I think its suppose to be below 7. I’ve never had a gout attack but my dad had gout and I sure don’t want to experience it. I think I need to make changes. I was thinking of going from 20 carbs/day to 40. I was told to decrease my purines. That’s hard. Seems every vegetable has purines. I have been eating sardines almost every day and they are high in it so I’m going to cut that out. I was told potassium citrate, tart cherry extract, and celery juice are good for combating it. My protein intake is around 8-9 ounces/ day. This seems to be a problem for some people on keto. I could sure use some advice.

Try searching the forums for ‘gout’ and reading what others have gone through. There are plenty of acute remedies out there including what you’ve stated in your post.

Phinney and Volek have noted that on a LCHF diet that uric acid levels will rise and then a few months in, will return to baseline, so your levels are consistent with that and my own experience. Mine peaked at 10.9 and is trending back down a year after starting, at 7 now.

Gary Taubes’s ‘director’s cut’ chapter of Good Calories, Bad Calories was to be regarding Gout as a result of chronic fructose metabolism.

As a result, if I feel a twinge in the joints, I’ll do 2-3oz of ACV, 1Tbs/quart of water, tart cherry pills, vitamin C 2g, and up to 800mg ibuprofen for a day or two.

I make sure to avoid fructose, gluten, legumes, sashimi and shellfish and any vegetable oil period for at least a week.

Even olive oil?

Thanks for the info @Dipper_Actual. Glad to hear that your uric acid levels went back down!

woah, hey apples and oranges, buddy!

Hah, no, olive oil is a perfect fat if it is true olive oil. Look for born on/expiration date and a darkened bottle for a good sign that it’s not adulterated with some evil vegetable oil.

No, vegetable oil is like from soy, corn, rapeseed, all the grains and nuts that don’t really naturally produce an oil. Another way to think about it is this, if you can squeeze (cold press) something and get a usable product, then that’s the good stuff. So coconut, olive and umm cow udders, make the best sources. Butter, people!

Everything in that clear bottle of ‘vegetable oil’ is going to be Omega 6 fatty acids, will cause inflammation and contribute to all the bad things of metabolic syndrome. Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio of 1:1 or better, as found in grass fed food and coconut/olive oils are much more pleasing to the body.

I had a gout attack 10 weeks into Keto, the worst day was Christmas eve day. Pre-keto, I drank lots of water and drank some tart cherry juice nightly. Keto me was not going to drink cherry juice, so I found some tart cherry extract pills at a national chain store. i started taking the supplement pills, increased my water consumption, and a few days later I was through the attack. I currently take the supplement intermittently, have kept my water consumption up, started drinking Ketoade almost daily, and have not had a gout symptom since late December. My big toe has not felt this good in the past 9 years.

I wonder what effects saturated fats have on high uric acid levels. i’ve been trying to cut them out completely with the exception of what is in meat. I try to go with lean meats. I also gave up coconut oil because it is a saturated fat. Also wonder if there is any connection between high uric acid/gout and high cholesterol.

I have been doing zero carb for January, which led me to eat a lot of beef. I’ve had one flareup of gout, which didn’t go away until I took some Colchicine. I felt better for two days and this morning I’ve got it even worse in the same spot, my left toe. Fortunately, I’m fasting until Friday night, so I’m hoping water, black coffee and keto aide for the next 72 hours will help flush that uric acid out. ‘Cause it’s really frickin’ painful this time.

I thought fasting would increase uric acid levels?
