Upcoming surgery - things to know?

(Cynthia) #1

I am having major surgery on January 8th. I am diabetic but it that being controlled through diet (last A1C was 5.9) I have been Keto since October 2016.

Reading through the forum I’ve discovered the following information:

  1. No IV glucose.
  2. Don’t restrict calories during healing.
  3. Stress/pain/healing can cause blood glucose to rise leading to use of an insulin drip. (Is that ok to have? I know insulin leads to weight gain, but short term will it cause any problems?)

I noticed that some people gained weight during the process, but since they are removing a 22cm x 17cm x 14cm ovarian mass, I do expect to have a net weight and abdominal inches loss!

Is there anything else to add to this? Thank you for your help, knowledge, and wisdom!

Arrange for a friend to bring you real food. The hospital will feed you the most awful junk. Tell your doc in advance that you are doing this so he won’t be concerned when told you aren’t eating what they serve you.

I will have meals ready for my family to bring me and I’ll probably get my husband to help dispose of the hospital food. I am planning to take butter and coconut oil too. The awful hospital junk I was given the last time that I was hospitalized was the final push toward this WOE.

More than likely they will ask you to drink a carb up formula prior to operation. Probably better to flush it.
