Upcoming knee surgery need to ditch weight fast and confused!

#1

I was called today about scans for upcoming knee surgery.
I got very excited cause it got cancelled with CoVid and I have been in lockdown for 3 months due to asthma and co-morbidities and being over 70yo.
When I saw the surgeon before lockdown hit I was 80 kilos and I confidently told him I would get to 70 before my surgery. Actually, I am now 88…have gained 8 kilos in the past 3 months of no gym and no outings and a high steroid due to massively inflamed and bleeding sinuses from allergies to dust mites…rather stupidly was clearing old papers an dforgot they had dust on them!

Walking is too painful so that isn’t an option. Gym is closed. Cant bicycle or do anything that involves weight on knee which is totally cartilegeless.

Because I rather depserately want to to have this surgery go ahead and go well, I am wondering what would you do in my situation?

Weight gain is due to steroids I think…1 month high dose, which dropped y ketones and upped my glucose.
Am primarily carnivore 'cause was lectin sensitive very badly and have healed a lot of gut issues such as IBS.

Not wedded to anything, just trying very hard to get healthy. Wondering if I should try fasting to drop weight fast presurgery. Keto doesn’t really seem to drop weight for me but fasting does in the past…am a bit confused from too much info at the moment.

Experience and suggestions most welcome!!!
Thank you. :grinning:

If fasting works for weightloss for you it sounds like the way to go. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and with the surgery.

Extended fasting. How long until your surgery?

Thanks @Polly1

@Janie thanks, that is what I was thinking.
CT scans on Friday for designing implants, date for surgery depends on Covid numbers, but any day now if the numbers stay down. Large hospitals bump surgery if the numbers are raising to keep possible beds and possible ventilators free for treating possible infections. I am in Sydney and my surgeon is keto & locarb and brilliant (imo). :grinning:
Crossing fingers and toes I get to go ahead.

Fingers crossed for you. Hope it goes ahead and goes well!

Good luck with the surgery. I worked hard to reduce belly fat before my kidney transplant which was before I knew about keto. Abdominal surgery is much easier and you heal faster if you aren’t carrying a lot of belly fat. I don’t know why weight loss before a knee replacement surgery is such a critical issue though. Lot’s of overweight people get hip and knee replacement surgery. :cowboy_hat_face:

It’s important for knee surgery because your knees carry the whole of your bodyweight, greatly multiplied because of stepping from one leg to the other, and when they chop large chunks of bone out and attach artificial implants to the two long weight bearing leg bones, the less weight they carry the more chance of healing well and less painfully and with less need to go back for revision…a common occurrence amongst overweight people post surgery. I don’t want to redo.

Thanks David. :grinning: Well done on losing belly weight before your surgery. I am grateful to be in ketosis 'cause of the reduced infection rate, according to my surgeon.

That makes sense, I was only thinking of the surgery not recovery. :cowboy_hat_face:

Steroids are bad in many ways, including weight gain. (So much for “calories”.)

Exercise really doesn’t cause weight loss anyway. I gained all my weight while exercising, and lost most of that while exercising less. I’m one of those who have always exercised, since I was 15 or so. 40+ years of exercise.

Just keep calm and keto on.
