UK shop purchased broth & stock concentrates

Has anyone had any success finding something that can be bought commercially that works for those broth fasting days??

Everything on Amazon seems to be super expensive? £30 for one jar seems ridiculous.

Haven’t really got the necessary equipment to make it at home with bones, so looking for a stop gap.

You haven’t got a saucepan or water?

(Alex ) #3

yeah, I have saucepans, but nothing really big enough to make as much as I would like, the effort vs results for me currently makes it more aggro… the handle snapped on my pressure cooker pan, that might have worked…

really just looking for a concentrate that I can use adhoc… that doesnt suffer too bad with shoddy ingredients…

I’ve seen bone broth powders on amazon that seemed ok but I didn’t order. Made my own a few times in the slow cooker but it’s too much hassle to do regularly.

Do they do stock cubes or powder in Britain? Or concentrated soup base (U.S. term)? We also have bone broth that’s sold in shelf-stable boxes and needs to be refrigerated after opening.

Knorr makes powdered soups that might do in a pinch, as well.

Of course, you have to scrutinise the ingredients pretty carefully. A lot of brands have stuff that’s best avoided.

(Allie) #8

They do but I’ve yet to find one that doesn’t have sugar or dextrose added.

(Alex ) #9

@PaulL - I have some Knorr stock cubes which have really negligible levels of carbs, I have been using those this week, but just wondered if there was something a bit more organic available that wouldnt break the bank… I might just stick with the cubes in all honesty, I’m not going to fall out with myself for a couple of carbs in a day…

(Alex ) #10

so expensive Allie, cant justify £36 for one jar…

(bulkbiker) #11

Put the money towards a new pressure cooker? … just sayin’…

(Alex ) #12

yeah, you know what, I think that may just be the way forward… might ask the butchers about bones next time I get into town…

(bulkbiker) #13

well at least with home-made you know exactly what’s in it…
And in the long term hugely cheaper…

(Alex ) #14

Yeah… I was using the left over water from boiling gammon joints as a stock drink, that was pretty nice, that would give about 2-3 litres to use once the veg was strained out, to be honest, that’s even more cost effective really, I just wanted to get something with slightly more taste and substance about it…

these seem to have a lot less sugar derivatives in…?

Hydrolysed vegetable protein ( soya ), sea salt, vegetable fat, carrot (3%), tomato (2%), onion (2%), spices ( celery , pepper, mace, turmeric, curry powder, paprika), herbs (lovage, parsley), garlic. Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #16

Now, see, that would put me off it, right there!

No offense to anyone who goes that route. It’s just that I could only go vegetarian if bacon were a plant, lol!

(Alex ) #17

LOL!

Looks better than the knorr ingredients - I’m counting 3 different sugars, and several types of fat, one that I’ve actually never heard of?!

  • Salt,
  • Potato Starch,
  • Vegetable Fats (Palm, Shea Butter, Sal Butter),
  • Yeast Extract,
  • Sugar,
  • Smoked Bacon [Lard, Antioxidant (Extracts of Rosemary), Smoke] (5.5%), Ham Powder [Pork, Salt, Antioxidant (Extracts of Rosemary)] (1.1%),
  • Caramel Syrup,
  • Maltodextrin,
  • Herbs (Parsley, Tarragon),
  • Spices (Pepper, Parsley Roots, Celery Seeds),
  • Flavourings,
  • Dextrose,
  • Smoke Flavouring

4 sugars?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #19

Yeah, four. ( = glucose, basically)

(Allie) #20

That’s why I didn’t buy it. I don’t like bone broth and don’t like the price either. Collagen powder blended into my coffee suits me just fine.
