UK ketoers- pork rind find

(Christian) #1

So happy. Just looking for my usual pork shoulder joint in my local supermarket and found this.
Never knew. I am one happy man.

(Christian) #2

Not enough fat on it mind you…

(bulkbiker) #3

let us know how you get on cooking it…
I leave it to dry in the fridge for a day
then oven it for 30 mins flattened out between 2 baking sheets to keep it flat.
Whack the oven up high for 15 mis or so watching all the time.
I get puffy crunchy stuff but it doesn’t have the porky scratching fat… bit too dry.
I might try it to make some breading for halloumi chips tonight though…

Oh I bought them a couple of weeks ago in the same supermarket and made some pork rind.
It was so delicious!! Here’s my work of art

(Christian) #5

How the heck u make em look like that…? Same way as previous post?

(bulkbiker) #6

Bloody hell they look good method please?

(Allie) #7

There’s some great things in Morrisons

(Alec) #8

Wish I could find that in Aus. Been looking and asking. All I get is ā€œno we are never sent anything like that!ā€ Need to find a friendly butcher.

(Christian) #9

Apparently they get sent a ā€˜sheet’ of pig skin (I’m guessing this is in fact, the actual skin of a pig) then they chop n roll.
39p? That’s lunch sorted. Bit of Peri Peri and some salt and I’m good to go

Alec, Coles and Woolworths sell it in the pork section. It’s usually 5$ a kilo.

(Alec) #11

Kate
I have looked repeatedly in both WW and Coles here in Bega and Merimbula, and no joy… I can get the odd pack of beet fat, but no pork skin…

:frowning:

That is such a shame! Are you regional? Not sure where Bega is, but if things kept during travel I’d send you some in exchange for some cheese! I would hit up your local butchers.

(Alec) #13

Yes, regional… sticks! I have also tried butchers and they were not overly helpful either… I would love to be able to just buy in Coles!

I know it’s not quite the same thing, but have you seen Myron Stars Special Pork Crackers[sic]?

Note the disclaimer:

DISCLAIMER: Cracker contains plenty of fat. If you do not like, please order the Regular

Like the home made ones in the photo above, these leave 5-10mm of fat under the crackling bit. It is really rich. A handful is usually enough to fill you. I bought a full box of 25 packets the other day.

(Alec) #15

THAT looks fantastic, just what I want. For me, these are real pork scratchings, with the fat, not just puffed up skin.

Thanks for the tip!
Cheers

I’ve found almost every Asian grocer stocks the ā€œregularā€ (no fat ones), but only the odd ones here and there stock the Special ones. I had to ask my local to order them in, hence the full box size.

I asked the Asian grocer to do a special order, and I got it for $5 per bag (Their regular price was $6 per bag), in a box of 25. Not sure if the online guys will be able to do a better deal for you, or if Bega has a local Asian grocer, but certainly worth looking into.

(Alec) #17

Bega… sticks… Asian grocer, no chance! :frowning:

Haha. I know the feeling, kind of as a spectator though. My wife and I love Australian road trips, and we often stay in small country towns like Bega for a few days. We stayed once in Bodalla, which isn’t far from you guys, and the main shopping centre was like maybe 150m long, and half the shops had something to do with Cheese/Dairy.

Still, I have been surprised. Port Stephens, which is only twice as big as Bega had an Asian Grocers.

(Christian) #19

Surely you guys get these in Australia?

(Allie) #20

@Ju-sery how did you cook these?
