Hello Everyone, so I am about to start my journey on the Keto Diet & I would like to know what are some of you guys typical day meals when you first started? Did you wait until the Keto Flu began to start adding electrolytes back in or did you do it from day 1?
Typical day meals
I drank Ketoaide from Day 1, I had attempted Keto once before and knew that was important.
I never experienced the Keto flu.
My typical months worth of meals were mostly grazing, trying to perfect my macros.
I’d eat cheese, salami, fish, cans of tuna, burgerless buns from take away shops etc.
As your hunger dissipates, sometimes it’s hard to eat, so naturally my meals turned into two a day (2MAD)
When I did that, they were really macro balanced so I fit all of my requirements into both of those meals.
Then I moved to One Meal a day (OMAD), which is difficult because it’s hard to eat so much in one sitting.
Now I just don’t eat - lol, rarely. I am now fat adapted and I generally fast for 24 hours every day.
A typical day for me might look like:
- 9 am: “Everything” Omelet, Fruit Cup
- 4 pm: “Dump” chili
- 8 pm: Breyer’s Carb Smart Ice Cream, Sunflower seeds
- 1 am: Corned beef and pepper jack cheese roll-ups
I live in a retirement community, and get breakfast plus one other meal each day. So my breakfast is almost always that omelet (they make it well). My 1 am snack is typically the same. But the mid-afternoon meal is based on what they serve us. I take it home and use it as raw ingredients for my meal. On this particular day, I picked up hamburgers, without buns. I ground up the beef patty with my Magic Bullet, added salsa, diced onions, and spices, and made a big bowl of chili.
When I first started, I didn’t do very well. I figured out that I had to cut the carbs out and I did that, but I found it difficult to eat enough fat. I overdid it on the protein and it took quite a while to get into ketosis.
Things started turning around when I got my wife some keto cookbooks and recipes from dietdoctor.com.
For this evening’s meal, I had bacon, eggs, avocado, and sour cream along with two tbsp of coconut oil that preceded my meal.
Unless you are really into cooking, I would suggest keeping it real simple the first few months starting keto. Bacon, eggs, avocado, veggies cooked in butter or bacon fat, bunless burgers, steak, things that are easy to cook up. Do what you can to keep electrolytes up from day one. The first few weeks are for figuring things out, learning from your mistakes and making adjustments to your food intake. For me the thing that was the trickiest was keeping protein at a moderate level.
Once you’ve got the hang of things and have some keto time under your belt, then you can start making those more involved keto meals (or not, there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping it real simple). I just think some people get too overwhelmed with the diet change and making recipes and figuring this keto thing out all at once.
And just remember to Keep Calm and Keto On. We’re here to help out if you need it!
+1 to @Sheri_Knauer s entire response. I’m 5 months in and it took me a while to settle into what she succinctly conveyed in a few paragraphs. Excellent advice !
Thank you so much! Definitely true about getting overwhelmed, that’s me. So glad I joined! Help is something I’m not afraid to ask for I really appreciate your help
