Hi Keto Family;

I am a huge fan of Gary Fettke, Igor Cummings, Jason Fung…etc. I follow them on twitter. The other day Gary Fettke (in what I can only imagine was a complete bout of rage over the public’s view of sugar) tweeted out this picture with a suggestion that all processed sugars, grains have this picture on the front of the box to warn of the dangers of sugar leading to diabetes. I believe they have started putting similar pictures on boxes of cigarettes to really drive home the dangers of smoking. I believe Fettke’s point was, why don’t we do the same for every box of Fruit Loops and Donuts. I will be honest, this picture makes me really think twice about cheating on Keto. Maybe I should keep it in my wallet and take it out whenever I want a donut.
I am curious, what do you guys think? Should we put this warning on high sugar foods and grains? Can’t wait to see this discussion.

Dawn, I imagine there are hundreds of millions of Dollars at the ready for lobbyists to use to snuff out any such proposed legislation.

A friend of mine, Type 2 Diabetic for a long time, had one leg amputated last year, an inch below the knee. It began as a little crack in the skin of one heel… I saw him in September, and asked him about his doctors ongoing care for him and what they were saying. Was he watching how many carbohydrates he ate? No good news at all - apparently, his doctors only think in terms of adjusting his insulin dosages. Asked him what his A1C was lately, he said, “It’s been a little high, 13 or 14.” Ouch. 6.5 and above is considered diabetic.

I am so sorry for your friend. If only we could have got him hooked on keto before all of this started.

I agree, lobbyists will never let this happen. But it is very intriguing to consider.

Dawn,

Yes, of course they’re right. Within the context of the Carb based lipogenic nutritional pattern. However, let’s look at it in terms of the Science, in the different context of a fat based, lipolytic pattern.

Carbs eaten when lipogenic are detrimental, adding to the chronic insulin secretion pattern, continuing the detrimental adaptive pattern.

Occasional carbs eaten within the lipolytic, glucagon secreting pattern are not, as long as types, amounts and frequencies don’t change the secretion pattern to being lipogenic, or primarily insulin secreting. You have to get to a pattern of chronic overcompensation of glycogen to get that to happen. That means changing to a Carb, carb-fat pattern.

So, it’s a matter of understanding the science of what happens when you eat specific foods, rather than an overall demonization belief. Let’s not get to the same point as the anti fat nut jobs, let’s understand the Science.

Have your occasional treat if you want to. Even paleoman ate some carbs every now and then. If anything it’s beneficial, as long as it doesn’t become a chronic pattern.

You are 100% correct. I agree.

If carbs were as bad for us as the keto hive mind would have you believe they wouldn’t be as tasty as they are. They’re tasty because if paleo-man came upon a donut-tree it was beneficial for him to eat all of them. It’s clear that as a society we’re eating too much easily digested carbs, but that doesn’t mean they’re toxic. Even if diabetes and metabolic syndrome are greater drains on healthcare than smoking, carbs have quite a different place than cigarettes in their respective contexts.
