Ever since the holidays I’ve been having trouble sticking with keto macros long term. I can go a few days or weeks, but I keep letting temptations win. It’s usually just one meal or one dessert at or after dinner once a week. I haven’t lost any weight this year. I do need to lose a bit more to get to a healthy BMI (60lbs lost last year).
I’m committing to 6 weeks strict keto macros so that I can kick the carb cravings again. I’m miss the freedom I experienced last year after committing to keto.
Trying to get back on track
What works for me is planning my meals ahead of time and sticking to the plan. I shop for fresh meat and vegetables twice a week and before I leave the store, I pretty much know what I will be eating for the next 3-4 days. It helps that I really enjoy the LCHF foods that I am eating.
So I think what happened is you let your guard down for the holidays and rekindled your carb cravings. Once some people let that back in again it keeps getting harder to get back to ketosis and you stay on that roller coaster of almost getting in ketosis, blowing once a week and so you’re not fat adapted and you keep craving the sugar/carbs all the time and give in.
While it’s good that you’re getting back to keto it sounds like you’re setting a limit on how long you need to stay strict with <20g. of carbs daily. I would caution you that you sound like your approaching this strictly as weight loss and not your new way of eating. Cycling back and forth between carbs and high fat is hard on your body. Losing weight, going back to carbs and gaining some back, “dieting” again to start the process over is stressful on your metabolism and spirit.
Really consider starting to think of those foods that you’re falling for are your enemy. They’re getting in the way of your personal goals and for a few minutes of enjoyment set back all week until the next time. It’s tremendous that you dropped 60 lbs. last year, that’s really an accomplishment to be proud of. Don’t undermine yourself because I can see that you’re much stronger than that. I hope for your success.
Good Luck, Mel!
I tried to eat a home-made chip (fries) and had one mouthful and no no no no, not right. This is after a few days on keto, the carbs no longer have their hooks in me. It’s as much a mental attitude as a physical one.
