Hey everyone! Name is Jennifer. I attempted to change my eating habits about a month and a half ago. I thought I could do Keto without counting macros. I’ve lost some inches so far but I know for a fact I’m not taking in enough fat! This morning I tried adding 1 tbsp of olive oil to my protein shake and I have had the worse stomach ache ever. Couldn’t even work out! Please help! I need all the help I can get so I can actually hit ketosis!!

You may only need to count your carbs.

Most Americans are already eating the amount of protein grams that a ketonian would. Fat is eaten to satiety. Thus your greatest attention would be on carbs. Carb grams is not a squishy thing when you are starting out. You absolutely need to limit them in order to get fat adapted (and not just into ketosis). At the outset, it is strongly recommended everyone count their carbs.

If you eat extra fat and it makes you ill, you are either not used to it and have to work your way up to more, or else you’ve reached your satiety and should not eat more.

I don’t count fat grams and am usually OK, except for when I’m not. Nausea results when I go carelessly overboard.

What are you using for protein in the shake? If you are someone with insulin resistance, I would avoid powdered protein, especially whey, and eat some real food instead.

As for the olive oil, that might be harder for you to digest on an empty stomach than something like coconut oil, cream or butter.

Totally agree! When you start out, you need to ditch the P’s…no Powders, Pills or Pre-Packaged Crap! Just eat Real Food. You will probably need to learn how to cook. If you’re hungry in the morning make some eggs for breakfast and use bacon fat to cook them. Just stick to simple stuff. I know it’s a pain in the ass to have to get up a few mins early to actually scramble some eggs or whatnot, but it’s well worth the effort, you’ll see.

I am using whey. Just thought it would be good, keep my appetite at bay, and be easy on the go breakfast. I am going to stop that immediately. I have no problem cooking! Thanks for the advice!!

I pre-cook bacon and then quickly reheat or crumble into my eggs. That saves time in the mornings! I’ve actually started Intermittent Fasting so I don’t eat breakfast during the week.

Fat does that more effectively.

I do shakes fairly often, especially around workouts, I put in heavy cream to get the fat I want and it tastes awesome, doesn’t upset my stomach at all.

How does intermittent fasting work?

(Mel Tesoriero) #12

Ahhh thanks Kristen! Appreciate the quick response x

Intermittent fasting is having an 18 hour fasting window with a 6 hour eating window. Most people skip breakfast and have their first meal of the day at lunchtime. For instance, last meal of the day is finished at 6:00, then you break your fast at 12. Then you can eat 2 or 3 meals within the next 6 hours. Some people eat breakfast and lunch and then skip dinner. Whatever works best with your schedule. Read The Complete Book of Fasting by Dr. Jason Fung, or listen to podcasts by 2ketodudes.
