Trouble staying hydrated

SPECIFIC: I’ve been on Keto diet with a one day per week (Saturday) cheat day in which I eat whatever the F*** I want.

I work normally with this diet (WARNING: this is ultra specific and may not pertain to all users):

Workout at 5:45-6:45am
Protein shake with 2 carbs/30G protein within 30 min. after working out.

Smoothie at 11 (or 1:30 if I’ve had 3 eggs/3bacon strips at 7:30)

  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tsp 100%cacao powder
  • 1 tsp Yerba Mate with Stevia
    -1/3-1/2 tsp L-theanine powder
  • 1 tsp lions mane mushroom powder
    -3 tbsp unrefined coconut oil
  • 1 tsp matcha powder
    -1.5 tsp Brahmin powder
-3/4 Cup Almond milk (unsweetened original)
-1 scoop pure whey protein powder (34 G protein, 2 grams Carbs)

Dinner is (usually):

  • 6 cups mixed lettuce
  • 1/4+ cup carrots
  • 1/4+ cup onion
  • 1/3+ cup avocado
  • 1/8 cup Jalapeno
  • 1/4 cup cheddar cheese
  • 1/3 cup portobello mushrooms
  • 2.5 tbsp ranch
  • 1 tbsp red hot sauce
  • Water on average per day/200 ounces+ up to 250 or more

Snack (average)
-10 oz walnuts

  • 4 oz. (at least) coconut oil

I am really having a hard time keeping my urine (read: hydration) in check. I drink a significant amount of water and occasionally (Friday/Saturday) have a drink (or 5) (I keep keto Friday and cheat Saturday).

Side notes: I work out at 5:45 every day 4-5 days a week with heavy weight for my weight (195lbs)

  • I go to sleep around 11pm
  • I am disciplined and am strict but I have 2 cups of coffee on an average day to interact with L-theanine

So many thanks to any responses and/or advice to improve

Oh yeah I love bacon and each 1+ pounds per week as a snack and dessert basically

The fact that you do not know how much water you are drinking a day is the root cause. Fix that, and your concerns will resolve themselves.

I’m currently fasting and drinking a minimum of 120oz which is four fills on my 30oz tumbler.

I’ve been drinking about 10 - 25oz waterbottles a day and I am still getting darker colored urine.

Why are you drinking that much water? That’s almost 2 gallons of water and equals 31- 8 ounce glasses per day. You must be flushing out much needed electrolytes. You can’t be dehydrated drinking so much. Your urine is dark for some other reason.

Read the book or google podcasts on “the salt fix” he discusses exactly what your issue might be. It was a huge eye opener for me

@sandra, I have the book, can you point me to the right section?

(sandra) #7

Pretty much the whole book talks about it but it was a video that I recall, let me look for it.

So sorry I flooded myself with his videos so I can not remember the exact one but this may be it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTr3S2Bqlow

Hopefully you are getting enough salt and electrolytes overall, unless you have a specific condition that don’t allow it. Main point of the book is people on low carb diet lose more salt and need more than regular recommended 2.3g, maybe even double the amount. Also if you take any medication they may have additional diuretic effects.

I get my magnesium and potassium from avocado and dark greens. And I also make magnesium bicarbonate water, I add a teaspoon of sea salt to the 2litre magnesium water as well.

edit: just found this video on magnesium bicarbonate: https://youtu.be/-kVFjQ-ZrEs

@sandra, I’m really confused…is there some part of “The Salt Fix” that discusses dark urine?

Your kidneys must be tired, and that is no joke. You might want to visit the ER ASAP.

Too much water can be dangerous. Research Hyponatremia. One of Dr. Tim Noakes areas of expertise.
