Trolling health email?

(Consensus is Politics) #1

I’m reluctant to say who I got this from. Most likely no one here knows him, maybe a few do. I ended up on his mailing list after having an argument on Quora. The Argument was about losing weight, the role of insulin, et. al.

The email I received was basically a newsletter for his business, it’s health related. This was in the body of the text, and I’ve been considering outing this guy, but I don’t want to look like a jerk.

“Calories matter much more than food quality, nutrient timing, supplements, organic foods etc.”

I had to read that one sentence maybe ten times or more. The main gist of the entire email was what diets work best, how to lose weight. In the end it wasn’t answered, with the exception of that sentence looking like the answer.

Thoughts? Personally, I think the most important thing to any diet is the nutrients. If all the nutrients are present, you could live a long life on junk food. Remove a few vital nutrients and you wouldn’t live for several months, possibly you could expire much sooner.

Name and shame.

And I agree with you.

The science is settled. Mainstream has not caught up with the science. Food Quality and Timing matters. Mainstream takes up to 20 years to catch up. At least it did with the cause of stomach ulcers:
Helicobacter pylori ( H . pylori ) bacteria as the cause.

I’m working my way through these: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrVWtWmYRR2ANkYesCA90xb0yLT1e6AdU

Especially Dr. Paul Mason and Dr. Gary Fettke law it out simply. Not much on timing but low carb yes. Timing is more advanced and I’m looking for that playlist (so to speak) because my needs are now more around timing and not food quality, low carb. Got that working. Got some timing working, just need to keep pushing it.

Hmm… calories more important than food quality? Um no… i don’t think so. It isn’t going to matter how many calories you eat if your dead already.

There is a reason why people developed scurvy. If quality didnt matter…these people would have been fine. People today are walking dead. Their choice of food quality is killing them.

Take the demographic of people around me. I live near 3 large First Nations reserves. The First Nations diet used to be very healthy. Full of high amounts of vitamins and anti-oxidants, packed full of healthy Omegas and nutrients…very low in sugar. Biw the majority of the population is feeding their younger generations
-pop tarts
-peperoni and cheese sticks
-pizza pops
-Kraft Dinner
-Macaroni
-Frozen breaded chicken strips
-French Fries
-Frozen Breaded Fish
-Slurpies and Candy

I am not saying ALL of them do… but i work with many families who believe that sending their kids to our program with Mr. Noodle bowls is healthy because its soup. One of my clients shows up to Lunch with
-2 granola bars
-4 cookies
-1 pudding
-1 beautifully meat and veggie packed wrap
-2 cups of cabteloupe chunks
-Iced tea juice box
-1 bananna

His family and i sat and discussed his goals and they want him to lose weight. 15 pounds in a year is what they hope for him. They say they pack him healthy low fat lunches abd cant understand why he isnt losing weight. They want me to take him to the gym 2x per week because they think he isnt active enough to lose weight BUT guess what??? That lunch i just posted is an every day lunch for him. They think he is eating healthy cause that granola bar and pudding and fruit and cookies are low fat. There is absolutely nothing wrong with his home made drool worthy meat and cheese wraps he brings but the rest of it is pure junk. But because he is an adult dependent who has non verbal autism and his parents take care of him and pack his lunch, there is nothing i can do to change his weight issue inless i can convince his parents that his lunch isnt healthy and needs to be focussed on other food groups like proteins and veggies.

Oh and if food quality doesnt matter as much as calories… tell that to a Parent who has a child with ADHD(classic not suspected or mild form) Parents who feed their ADHD child a specific ADHD diet, know the difference between their kid functioning daily on meat and veggies versus functioning on sugar and food dye additive based foods. Good luck convincing them that calories matter more than food quality.

Though I agree with mostly everything you’re saying, this is the most unscientific statement you could ever say. Science is NEVER settled.

You’re awesome @PortHardy , I have a 25 year old autistic son, and I really appreciate folks who dedicate their lives to helping them. I know how difficult it is, and I have to give big respect to anyone who chooses to do that line of work. Thank you. And yes, I have seen how others feed their autistic kids and are in denial about food making a difference.

I wonder if it would be possible to show these parents “The Magic Pill.” It’s available on Netflix.

Thanks! I can only imagine the frustrations and hurdles that life throws parents when they are navigating a diagnosis like Autism. My job is very rewarding and I take a stance that x diagnosis does not mean “can’t or not abled”. Sadly, even in my work, I am forced to fight with Parents negative beliefs about their Adult Dependents and what they can or can not do. I had to take a video of my client passing a weighted ball back and forth while on an exercise ball bouncing while passing to other clients. The Parents did not believe me when I told them that
a) their son could balance on an exercise ball
b) their son was playing pass with a group of other adult dependents at our program.
c) that their son had the motor coordination to pass a weighted ball back and forth.

His Mom cried and his Dad was dumbfounded. You should have seen the look on their faces when I told them he used a resistance bike at the gym and did step aerobics with me for 15 minutes without stopping(they believe he doesnt have the proper motor/eye coordination to go up stairs without holding on to somthing)

People keep saying “dis-abled” and i believe “how about ABLE” But sadly, even some of my co-workers who work in the Day Program with me, don’t believe our clients can do more. They want to coddle them and make excuses for them and not push them, out of fear, that they will get hurt. But what people need… what everyone needs… is a little belief! It can go a loooooong way! And don’t get me wrong… i have had days with my client where nothing goes right and he doesn’t want to to do or try anything new. Everyone is entitled to choices and somtimes we choose not to do anything new and thats okay. Somtimed life downright sucks and we have a bad day and even doing somthing as fun as going to a cafe for a drink, is too much for one day… but the point is… we don’t quit… we keep going and we keep trying.

I have so much admiration for parents who take care of their Adult Dependent because parenting in general, is tough. But parenting someone who has extraordinary challenges can be that much tougher. There can be a lot of challenges and problems and it can be tricky to find solutions or way to navigate through it.

So kudos right back at you for never giving up!!

This is standard CICO theory, and is still what 98% of the medical and nutrition world absolutely believes and states as fact. It’s very simple. Eat less calories than you use, and you will lose weight. And it’s technically true.

The problem is, if it really is that simple, why do diets fail 95% of the time? Us dieters are just weak, aren’t we? All 95% of us.

The CICO CW advice on how to lose weight has just failed. Period. Worthless crap when it comes to helping someone lose weight long term.

I say out them, argue the case. Make people aware there is differing opinion on what is important and useful in the battle to lose weight.

Just because CICO is a technically true truism does not make it useful as guidance for weight loss. Yes, I read and agree with one of my heroes Mr Taubes, and his wonderful analogy of how rich people became rich.

Perhaps for some metabolically healthy people, in the beginning.

Yet in these modern days of excess, most of us cannot stay inside the “calories matter” zone long enough, and thus it does not work. Also think that to varying degrees, lacking in nutrients and micronutrients can have us hungry and wanting things, or just craving more - and that often we cannot distinguish our lack from normal hunger.
