Travelling in ketosis

We’re flying from the UK to Thailand next week and wondering what tips people have for staying in ketosis during our time in transit (I think we will be OK once we get there as we can shop). We have I guess around 15-20 hours and my wife- who is keto as a medically prescribed protocol for adrenal/thyroid stuff - needs to be very careful she doesn’t get stretched or overwhelmed. Slightly more challenging for her as she is a veggie (but does eat some fish). I’m assuming we take some kind of fat bombs, some nuts, small bottles of kefir, water etc.

Any suggestions gratefully received (as indeed tips for being keto while there though google has yielded some reasonable ideas).

TIA, Mark

Eat a very filling fat filled meal before you leave and fast for the flight. If all else fails, bring along some good keto snacks.

Bottles of kefir and water can’t work for transit–over the size limit for liquids in cabin. For long trips, I recommend “emergency rations,” which are often packaged products: quest bars, quest protein powders, MCT oil powder, coconut oil powder. Then you can make shakes with water or milk on the plane.

What do we reckon to: https://www.amazon.co.uk/GoKetoTM-Hydroxybutyrate-Scoop-Exogenous-Ketones/product-reviews/B075LJMQVW/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_show_all_btm?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews ?

If you’re asking if that can replace food…no. If you’re asking if that can fix bad eating…no not really. I’m with James, I’d eat a big feast and fast for the flight.

IMO, all of the “products” floating around the market make our lives more complicated not less, just eat REAL food. If you have to have a shot of MCT, eat some coconut oil. Is there a flight law against that?

(Ethan) #7

No, but coconut oil is a “gel” and cannot be brought in sufficient quantity on the plane.

(Chris) #8

Should be limited to 4oz right?

(Ethan) #9

3 oz

(Chris) #10

Oof. Waste of time IMO.

(Ethan) #11

Exactly!. Just buy some Quest Protein Shake packets. Add some MCT oil powder or coconut oil powder and some milk purchased after security, and you have something to get by, along with Quest bars. That works for just getting by when you need. You can bring things in sufficient quantities to have for the flight back, too.

How about some smoked salmon and an avocado. Usually not an issue to take on the plane just can’t take it off in many places. I take a small cold bag and put in there. If you do need to take coconut oil just repackage it in a smaller container. 100ml is approx. 7 TBSP of good fat. That should get you where you are going. Throw in some macadamia nuts and you will have plenty of energy. I also love toasted coconut. Get the large shaved coconut and lightly toast and sprinkle with your favourite dry curry seasoning and sea salt. A yummy Keto snack!

I would stay away from milk, unless you just want to spike insulin and drive hunger. Chances of finding cream in an airport, probably slim to none.

(Mark H) #14

Can get coconut oil in capsules - would hope they would pass the [pointless] security checks

(Ethan) #15

4 oz of whole milk isn’t going to spike carbs overly so, but another option is to use water.

(James storie) #16

Whole milk has a fat percentage of what 4%? All I’m sayin is for the people who are metabolically broken, this can and will cause problems. My whole point is to not use products that are full of ingredients we would be better off without. There are real food options. Nuts, olives, etc.

(Ethan) #17

My metabolism is as broken as broken gets. 4 oz milk, 4 oz water, 1 protein powder packet, 2 scoops of coconut oil powder does not spike my glucose or insulin:

Fat 16.5g
Net carbs: 7g
Protein: 28g

(James storie) #18

Well, that’s fine for you, it may not be for someone else. I just don’t want a newB to get the wrong idea.

Good size meal before flight, take some macadamia nuts on board.
Put in a request with the airline for a “fish” meal.

NO!!
