I have been Keto for 9 weeks and been very spot on and focused. Not a drop of alcohol either. In one week I am headed on a vacation for 10 days. I would like to be able to have a few drinks with friends and I know I won’t have full control of my environment like I do at home. What experiences have others had in similar situation?
Traveling on keto
It’s easy to make food Keto friendly. Burger without bun, fish and veggies, wings as long as they aren’t breaded, etc. I’d keep some Keto friendly snacks in my purse if possible.
Non flavored hard liquor, like vodka and rum, are carb free and can be mixed with club soda (NOT tonic water, which has sugar), diet soda etc. A diet soda every now and then won’t kill you. But be warned - you’ll probably feel the affects of drinking alcohol much more quickly on Keto.
Here’s a pretty good keto travel article. I agree with all of it except the part where it says:
Don’t feel guilty about splurging on a sugary dessert
I have reasons for not wanting to trigger an eating binge, so I generally avoid sweet and/or carb-rich food. But I did have a crême brulée for dessert on my birthday last year, and I was a bit disappointed at how ordinary it tasted, and a bit surprised (and quite pleased) that it actually failed to trigger a binge. I was not surprised to feel achey and slow the next day, however.
These days, while I still do get cravings for things, I am not as concerned to indulge myself, because as I go on eating my ketogenic diet, I am more and more satisfied by the foods the diet allows.
I travel extensively for work, usually 16 days a month. I can always find a keto friendly meal at the hotel or airport restaurant. If I can’t find something more fitting I’ll go for wings or burger without bun. Nearly every restaurant has this.
I don’t drink much on the road, but if I do it is vodka w/soda and lime wedge or bourbon w/ rocks.
It wont be as hard as you think.
The only thing I can tell you that will matter is your resolve and frame of mind. Stay positive and don’t look back.
