Trans fat

(Mal Evans) #1

hi there, ive been on keto for a few weeks and getting along ok. I’m just wondering about trans fats because i thought they were bad… I’ve been drinking my coffee with heavy cream because I’ve heard on a few of the podcasts that this is ok for keto. today I started to log my daily food intake into myfitnesspal and have found out today that the heavy cream çontains trans fats. Is this ok for keto? or should i stop using this cream? are there types of cream with no trans fats?

I wouldn’t worry about it at all (it’s one of the top recommended foods on keto) but coconut cream in a can from Trader Joe’s is even better in coffee and has no trans fat. Some people are very anti dairy. I am not sure what the research can even tell us. I drink my coffee black now though to intermittent fast until late lunch or dinner.

Fat is not that great if you’re also eating a lot of carbs so a lot of these studies are biased towards a standard diet. PS Cream is excellent blended with frozen berries for an ice cream like dessert. Life is short!

The trans fats in cream are more properly referred to as conjugated fats. They aren’t quite the same as the synthetic trans fats ones should worry about. There is actually some evidence that they are health promoting. At worst they are neutral.

Just my $0.02

that is a great help, I’ve been hearing on the podcasts that we should try to get good, natural sources of fat and I’ve heard that trans fats are bad so was a bit confused. But i guess the cream is from a natural source! Thanks for the replies

Anything that has the word hydrogenated anywhere on the label (e.g., vegetable shortening, margarine) contains the kind of trans fat that you need to avoid. And the polyunsaturated fats from seed oils (safflower, canola, soy, cottonseed, etc.) are to be avoided, as well.

Vegetable oils go trans when cooked over a certain temperature. It’s like a bond in the molecule flips around the wrong way. A trans fat can’t be processed in your body and start to clog up cell membranes.

Saturated fats can’t go trans because they have s different structure. That’s why you should cook with butter and lard rather than vegetable oils.
