Tracking Ketosis through breath Acetone

Got the $99 Keyto device, and will be using it as a biofeedback device. https://shop.getkeyto.com/products/keyto-breath-sensor. It shows a number from 1-8.

Usability: It’s the size of a pen / vape device. Easy to keep in pocket. Sensor warms up in about a minute, and taking a reading costs nothing.

I’m not signing up for the online service: food tips, contests and social features. Perhaps I should…

Waking up, my range is 1-2. Pretty annoying. Thought I’d be higher.

Morning Protocol

Goal: Get into fat-burning mode before eating

Protocol

  • Black coffee
  • Don’t eat until 10AM or Keyto shows at least a 4.
  • Take coconut oil at 10AM if not at goal.

Let us know how this works out. I find I always have lower ketones in the morning and higher in the evening (and the reverse for blood sugar, higher in the morning and lower in the evening).

Interesting thx @ctviggen! I would have expected that ketones would be high in the AM after ~12 hours fasting 🤷
Got a 2, finally, after taking coconut oil. Was feeling hangry until then.

Fasting does, in general, raise ketones. However, once you’ve been keto/low carb for a while, blood sugar tends to rise in the morning. See this:

To get US units, multiply by 18. Blood sugar and ketones tend to be opposites: as you fast longer and longer, ketones go up and blood sugars go down. But for me, the shape of this curve stays the same, even when fasting multiple days. That is, even if I’m fasting 4.5 days, in the morning my blood sugar will be the highest for that day. Now, it’ll be lower than on day 0.5, 1.5, etc., but it’ll still follow this pattern. (For me, 0.5 means it’s the morning after dinner, 1.5 means it’s Tuesday morning after eating dinner Sunday night, etc.) And ketones will be opposite – higher at night and lower in the morning.

Food Testing Protocol

Will ingest one thing at a time to avoid confounders. Taking measurement at +15, +30, +45 minutes.
A food will be whitelisted if it does not harm ketosis.
