Toxin stored in your fat

(Jeff Hyman) #1

I have read many articles claiming we store toxin in our fat. Many articles also offer a product to cleanse these toxins. Though i am not interested in these cleanse products as much as i am interested in the truth about storing toxin. I have been hard core keto for almost 6 months. I have lost 32 lbs. and went from 44 waist to 40 can almost wedge into 38. If i describe my general well being i would say better than average before keto, but I must say i am not finding the generous energy everyone speaks of. My macros are good. I am in ketosis. I believe i am fat adapted. I intermittent fast 5 to 6 days a week, one meal a day in the evening. Still looking for the giant bucket of energy. If there is any truth to the toxin in fat story maybe the toxin is contaminating the burn. Any thoughts?

Ive heard stories of people who did lots of LSD in the 60s … when they lose weight they got flashbacks ! As some LSD deposited in their fat and then got released when they lost weight. Might be a myth.

It seems possible, but seems unlikely to cause issues. I would say this … if the toxins are impacting you now … they would have had profound impacts on you when you ingested them.

Thank you for the support!

They do store glucose. If you are diabetic, that is toxic.

Toxic is one of those words that is overused and misused IMHO.

LSD flashbacks are an urban myth.

This just smacks of anti-keto propaganda to me. It’s bound to happen since Keto is starting to finally get a foothold in the free market. Of course all the lobbyist, big agri-business, vegans, AHA, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseam wouldn’t be happy, but it’s to be expected. Ignore and remember…money talks and BS walks. It’s all about how you spend your hard earned dollars that really counts. KCKO and buy real butter! lol

Hey Jeff. :slightly_smiling_face: I have not felt “great” nor had boundless energy during ketogenic eating or fasting. That said, I’ve also definitely felt better than before, lighter, much less joint pain, rather “easy” going through the day - I put it down to my system not being burdened with large amounts of carbohydrates - hard on us who have metabolic problems.

Some toxins definitely get stored in fat cells - as per the link that @VLC.MD posted. For 33 years, I’ve worked with one of those persistent pollutants - PCBs. They are very stable, and don’t break down (makes them good as coolants and electrical insulating fluids in transformers and other large electrical apparatus). They “bio-accumulate,” i.e. if they get dumped into a river or ocean, the little fish get some in them, and are eaten by bigger fish, who are eaten by larger fish still… Humans taking a little dose once in a while build up a “total body burden” in the long run - the amount in the fat cells increasing. PCBs used to be in a lot of things, even in chewing gum.

When the fat cells release fat, out come some of the toxic substances, too. However, this doesn’t bug me - might as well get rid of it, eh? It’s been in your body for a while, it was likely in your bloodstream earlier, maybe this time it will be excreted. I also think we are talking about things that really have quite low toxicity, in the main. PCBs, for one, really are not a big deal. There has been a lot of hype in the past, but PCBs got blamed for the effects of furans and dioxins, things with toxicities roughly a thousand and a million times higher for humans, respectively.

When I first started keto, that’s when I felt a great increase of energy, and that’s when I lost weight the fastest. Now I’m ketoing on, eating the same things, but I haven’t lost much weight for months, and my energy is about what I remembered it to be pre-keto.

I’m not sure what the significance of this is. It could be that my higher energy level became my new normal, and I just don’t remember what it was like before. It could be that the process of losing weight was, itself, the cause of the extra energy, and if I ever start losing again, the energy bonus will return. Regardless, it did not seem, at least in my case, that weight loss caused a release of toxins that inhibited energy.

A lot of people comment on never achieving the bonus energy round, so you’re definitely not alone. I think it’s a very poorly understood phenomenon.

Are you getting enough sleep?

(Jeff Hyman) #9

TV advert the other night was for KETO shakes!

(Jeff Hyman) #11

Don’t understand this post ! What smacks of anti keto

(Ernest) #12

Those are rough hours but life must go on.
Lack of good sleep does affect energy.
