Toughts on Cyclical Ketogenic Diet

(bjørn arne) #1

I train a lot and i miss carbs, not unhealty carbs and sugar but like having a protein shake after work out, eating some nuts and having grains for breakfast sometimes and stuff like that. Cyclical Ketogenic diet seems like easyer to stay on for me, becouse after 3 months i am getting tired of just eating 80%fat. But the benefits have been extreme i feel so mutch better, do you think i possible could get same benefits while adding some carbs in intervals?

(I came for the weight loss and stayed for my sanity... ) #2

Some people do, I don’t, but then I am really severely insulin resistant… try and see was my approach, be your own guineapig.

If it does you harm you will know (headaches, grogginess, hangover symptoms and the like) and it will be easier to stay on the path after

I think 80% fat is high as f for someone training (if you’re talking about a CKD, I imagine “training” means weights"). Eat more meat, IMO.

I have used cyclical in the past and it seemed fine for building muscle and strength, okay for fat loss but not great. Look up the Apex Predator Diet by Jamie Lewis of Chaos and Pain. Probably one of the better ways to do it.

Why cant you do this now? (With the exception of grain) I eat nuts and have protein shakes. The shake is low carb but gets the job done. There are many that have around 2-4g which are pretty low. Have you figured out how many carbs you can handle without throwing yourself out of ketosis? That might be a good place to start and then go from there.

What is your goal? If it is weigh loss or controlling T2D you may have problems cycling higher carbs depending how high you go. Many people will have a day or so per week eating 50-100grams and don’t have a problem. It is generally an N=1 situation as we are all different.

Both CKD and TKD work well for people training. I’ve used both. The 80% fat dogma is “nutty keto” espoused by people merely repeating what some monetized guru has said. The CKD macro is typically 60/35/5% with a 36 hr glycogen recompensation, usually on the weekend. TKD is usually taking in about 20g of simple carbs, usually dextrose before workout, and 40g afterwards. Calories are tracked in both, with a 500 Cal per day deficit, consuming an extra days worth of carbs eaten (while eating low fat) during CKD recompensation. A one pound per week fat loss is the goal.

i might need to experiment a little with myself, ive been just so fockust on eating stright keto now for the last three months that i havent dared to try almost anything, i ate 150 grams of nuts one time, thats my only cheat meal. I stay bellow 20 carbs, but most days i guess its even not that high, probably avareges about 10-12 carbs per day.

It’s basically a rehash of Lyle McDonald’s “The Ketogenic Diet” of 20 years ago.
