Coke Shuts Down Nutrition Research it Doesn’t Like, Report Finds

(Alec) #2

I thought we had moved to a model where research studies had to be registered before they started and then they were forced to publish results if they were registered to avoid exactly this bias? Or have I misunderstood that?

I so don’t know! The more I learn the less I know :no_mouth:

Apparently, researchers have to sign confidentiality agreements in case the sponsors want to bury a study they don’t like the results of.

That article links to another article which footnotes the study.

They chose Coca-Cola as their study example and filed 129 Freedom of Information Act requests between 2015 and 2018 that generated more than 87,000 documents involving five research agreements with Louisiana State University, and the Universities of South Carolina, Toronto, and Washington. And from the actual study, which is a paper trail of legalese and email correspondence:

Our research points to particular concerns about early termination provisions. The termination provisions in some of the agreements that allow Coca-Cola to discontinue the studies it funds if results are unfavourable, in contrast to the assurances it makes on its website about not being able to prevent publication, should be cause of concern

Interesting new video on diet doctor with Gary Taubes about how the industry has deceived us for 40 years. Here is a link to the trailor, but the full movie available for anyone who already has a membership or wants a 30 day free membership. https://www.dietdoctor.com/new-movie-in-our-movie-library-sugar-coated

Here is another link to the full movie on TVO which everyone should get, if you like the trailer. I haven’t noticed it being referenced on here before which is why i think it is newer.
