I am new to Keto and have read some about salt… so how do you add salt and how much?

We are all different. I would kill to have your problem. I did my first 24 hour fast and spent the whole time in the bathroom!!

I put 1/8 tsp in my coffee, salt my food heavily (according to other people) and I put a large pinch under my tongue 2-3 times per day. If I am working outside especially. For me I need about 1-2tsp above and beyond my food salt to feel well. I had the same problems when I started out, and still do sometimes. But it has gotten much better. I think some people use psyllium to help also.

Check out β€œthe salt fix”

Since constipation is a symptom of low sodium, and we know that we need more salt on a ketogenic diet than on a high-carb diet, I would urge you to try to get a total of 2.5 tsp of salt per day, including the salt naturally presnt in your food.

Recent studies, including the PURE study out of McMaster University, indicate that people are at their healthiest when they consume around 5000 mg of sodium a day. Dr. Phinney recommends homemade bone broth as a tasty way of increasing one’s salt intake.

If you get really β€œStuck” then try some magnesium (I use citrate) goes through you very quickly!

A little MCT oil supplementation can help. Start with a small amount (1 tsp, maybe), as it can have a strongly laxative effect.
