After reading The Obesity Code, the part where he mentions even swishing artificial sweeteners can cause the stomach to make insulin, I checked my favorite toothpaste & mouthwash…sure enough, saccharin in my whitening mouthwash and sucralose in my Crest 3D white
What do y’all use that is sweetener free? And preferably whitening?
Toothpaste
Just don’t worry about it. It’s a tiny amount of sweetness in your day that isn’t backed up by any carbs. I’m actually pretty militant about not having artificial sweeteners but I draw the line at toothpaste and I even carry one of those squirt breath fresheners that I use a couple of times a day. Are you in ketosis? If so, I wouldn’t fret about what would only be a tiny extra blip of insulin.
Yes in ketosis, and losing weight at a good (fast) pace. I was shocked to see sweetener even in my toothpaste! It’s like I can’t escape the sugars/sweeteners even if I want to lol
If you’re really concerned, you can make your own.
There are tons of other baking soda toothpaste recipes, but lots of them contain xylitol or stevia which you may also be choosing to avoid.
Thanks! Maybe one day I’ll consider that, but it’s a little too hardcore for me right now
Yeah, if you’re not eating a dozen tubes a day I wouldn’t be too concerned.
But you always have the option if you feel the need.
Baking soda mixed with a bit of hydrogen peroxide is a potent combination.
once a week only though! take it from someone that ended up with horrendous sensitivity from doing this 2-3 times a week plus.
I read a scientific study somewhere that said your teeth actually get cleaner without toothpaste.
I use toothpaste, but there are various things in mouthwash that I don’t want, so I make my own. Water with a few drops of essential oil; good ones are oregano, thymol (thyme), tea tree, and cinnamon. I used to pay a fortune for a similar mixture at the dentist’s. Just make sure you only use a few drops per bottle of water. No sweetener. (Apparently peppermint doesn’t do anything other than smell good for a few minutes.)
I use a dilute solution of peroxide and water before bed. A 50% solution is usually recommended, but that’s way too strong for me. Also, peroxide has its drawbacks, but I’ve decided it’s worth it to me.
