Too much of good amount of protein

(Aya Zabadne) #1

Keto newbie (3rd day to be exact)
I have no idea if I’m doing this right
How much protein is too much protein
For example today I had two eggs, one chicken breast, and a canned tuna
Is that too much?

The number is partly determined by your current weight, activity level, lean body mass, and goals. But to keep it simple what is your height and activity level, and do you have muscle building goals.

I don’t have muscle building goals.
I’d say my activity level is very moderate and I’m 173cm tall

Lacking a weight, or a measurement of LBM, no one can suggest what an appropriate amount of protein is, assuming the community weren’t of two minds with grey area between on what a “moderate protein” would look like.

That would be insufficient protein for my daily go. But I have 170 lbs of LBM to feed on a 238 lbs frame. 12 from the eggs, maybe 27 from the chicken, Tuna is about 22-25/3 oz… So, call it 65g… About half my goal, but seems in line with some of the lower protein folks around here for someone a bit shorter than you.

Definitely need to quantify, not only you, but the things you’re eating.

Eggs are similar enough from size to size not to worry too much about them if they’re chicken eggs.

Chicken breasts come in lots of sizes. Cans of tuna come in different sizes, too.

When you get an idea of your lean body mass, that’ll give you a place to start to calculate a range that might work for you. It’ll still be you as an individual who will ultimately figure out where on the scale of “a little or a lot” you do best.

At that height you could probably stick around the 70-90g area, most peoples body’s are happy in that range. But the best way it to figure out your lean body mass, doesn’t have to be perfect and it’s something you can play with. How much protein is too much is very different for many people. More than 100g or so I used to wake up in the middle of the night like a heat lamp was on me sweating, now I’m in the gym following a very intense program and I’m keeping my protein at the 150-175g area and have no issues at all, it’s all about what your body can use.

You can plug in your specifics below and find your answers (and then will have more questions haha)

More than likely, whatever is your current normal for protein, is perfectly fine. You might have an optimal range, but if you are a little outside that for now, who cares. Focus on getting the hang of keto, and getting adjusted adapted, and finding the foods you like, and then in a few months, revisit the number crunching
