Too much cheese!

(Cassy Downs) #1

Yesterday we had a bday party for my father-in-law here at my home. Luckily when I am in charge 90% of the food is Keto!!! My father-in-laws girlfriend is on Atkins and he has Type 1 Diabetes so they definitely appreciated it.

I don’t feel like I cheated at all, really. I had more green olives then I normally do, there were carrots in my coleslaw but other than that nothing I don’t normally eat. The only think I can think of is too much cheese. I made a DELICIOUS Italian Meat and cheese tray ( my husbands family is Iatalian) all good fatty no carb meat and REAL cheese, no carbs, no sugars the good stuff. The only cheese that had carbs was the goat cheese. I am a sucker for it, it’s so good. The I had bacon wrapped jalapeños, smoked brisket with sugar free, carb free BBQ sauce and rubbed with fresh horseradish.

I woke up this morning and checked with breathalyzer , still blowing a .02 ( it’s always a .02 or a .03) my pee sticks show very high levels but I gained 3 lbs since yesterday! Eek.

The only thing I can think of is between the cheese and meat, too much protein maybe? Unfortunately, being with family I was not logging but rather enjoying my time with my family.

Either way, I want to fix this. I know EVERYONE is different, but I would love some advice from seasoned Ketoers! I am thinking I should just do a 24 hour fast or an IF fast. Is the right step to take?

Thanks for any advice!

I would not blame the cheese for 3 pounds in one day and it doses not matter if it was the cheese or everything else that you ate. Should you fast? Just to drop the 3 pounds? You have to step back and evaluate your long term goals. You should not change your eating habits based on a one day bing. This is a unhealthy way of thinking. If you have a long term goal and plan to get there just keep plugging away. If you fast regularly then do it like you normally do. Don’t let your emotions dictate how you eat. Just be as consistent as you can and if you have a bad day don’t get down on yourself. Controlling your emotions is harder then what you eat.

All that food you ate at your family feast is going through your digestive tract. It is easy to gain 4-5 pounds just in processing food. And you could be retaining a bit of water. I gain 5-8 pounds EVERY monthly cycle. Don’t worry about it and focus on your long term goals.

If you want to be proactive, fast a couple days till you are back to where you were. Fasting after feasts is a great way to be proactive and allows you to splurge every once in awhile.

Also, weighing yourself every day is probably not the best idea. I go for once a week…

I don’t consider what I ate yesterday a binge at all. I didn’t just eat to eat. I only ate when hungry and stopped when I was full. I don’t feel emotional about it I just think that I ate more cheese than normal and it had an impact on my body. I weigh myself everyday so I can just see if anything I eat affects me. I have been consistently dropping weight or staying the same, even after a 38 hour fast a week ago I lost 2 lbs and never gained any of it back. I was just curious if the protein in the cheese may have sent me over and affected me. Curious if anyone else had ever had maybe too much cheese or protein in general and gained pretty fast from it. I don’t want to keep eating a normal diet today and add more protein if it my be better to just “reset” persay.

Weight fluctuation for most people is totally normal. I honestly don’t think it’s from too much protein, and taking this temporary weight gain so hard probably isn’t mentally healthy. In short…

KCKO!

I agree with @akirby83. If you get too obsessive about this WOE, is it any better that CICO? Relax a bit and enjoy the journey. You’ll be fine!

Cheese is inflammatory for some people. It is for me. The extra few pounds will probably fall off after a few days.

The only true way to do that is test your blood glucose.
I only just recently discovered this myself and yes, I still weigh myself every morning and log it but I have noticed that when I gain a pound or two, I get a Whoosh that follows real soon. It is a journey after all. KCKO

Did you have a good time? Sure you did.Extra protein can be stored as fat in the body. There probably would be extra glucose in the blood, as well. Your scales are not telling the whole story - just part of it. You will probably be back to pre-party in a few days. Hang tight and eat another piece of :bacon:

Cheese does it to me. Both the high fat of the kinds I love and the protein will push me up instead of down.

Cheese can slow weight loss or even cause weight gain in many people due to its insulinogenic properties, but it won’t cause a significant gain of fat from one day.

Many of the foods you mentioned are quite salty, so you might have a little water retention, especially in the presence of an insulinogenic food. And any increase at all over your usual daily food mass, as Jennifer mentioned, will cause a temporary gain just because of the extra food in transit.

If you really want to drop that water quickly, a fast will definitely do it. But if you just resume your usual meals, it’ll probably go in a day or two, anyway.

I think you were right about the salt. I did feel VERY bloated all day yesterday! I fasted for 26 hours, broke it with a delicious chicken and bacon chowder and woke up blowing my highest at .06!!! I am also back to my previous weight!!

Thank you all for the advice. I do want to point out I was not really stressing. I understand weight can fluctuate during Keto. I just more wanted to find out what it was though that had that negative impact on my body so I can avoid it in the future. You all have been so amazing with all of your thoughts and advice, Thank you!!!

That should re-assure you the next time i happens - just relax and give yourself a few days to get back on the wagon…
