Too many carbs

(Sheryl) #1

I am new to Keto but am a healthy eater by nature. I dont eat fruit and my only carbs come from veggies. I found that i pretty much have to eliminate vegetables to stay under the 5% carb. I am using Myfitness pal app to track. What am i missing here? I know not to eat any veggies that grow underground, nothing starchy, no sugar…etc. When i calculate macros it seems like cutting veggies entirely is the only way to truly stay under my carb intake. I admit im a bit confused.

Are you subtracting the fiber grams from total grams of carbs?

(Sheryl) #3

Im not sure how to do that. It seems strange that dried tomato or cauliflower would be too many carbs.

For example…using MFP

W 1 cup of cauliflower

Carbs ( 5.3 ) - Fiber ( 2.5 ) = Net Carbs or 2.8

16oz (5 to 6 cups) low carb mixed veggies 15g to 20g net Carbs :grinning:

Frozen mixed veggies are the easiest most 12oz to 16oz bags are under 20g carbs

Good luck and much success in your journey in IF/EF Keto WOE

Personally, I would not stress too much about carbs coming from keto-friendly veggies. Not all carbs are created equally anyway. In addition, maybe you do not need to restrict to < 20 net carbs but can accommodate 50 g. Everybody is a little different and has to tweak their diet to their needs. If you want that carrot in your salad, go for it. Life is too short to stress about red bell peppers.

(Dan Dan) #7

And that is most likely why @Badas chose Keto WOE to have a long life rather than a short one

Not only does your advise not answer his question but it is confusing to newbies :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Less than 20g of carbs will help a newbie into Ketosis and become Fat Adapted as soon as possible

You have total carbs and net carbs (total carbs less the fibre)

Some people have to keep total carbs below 20g per day to stay in ketosis, others can use net carbs.

I personally had to keep my total carbs to almost zero for a few weeks and once my body adjusted I moved to net carbs.

Listen to your body and adjust to what works for you but the golden rule for a ketogenic diet is carbs below 20g per day (Net)

My daily veggie carbs come from a 1/2 cup cooked spinach or green beans or broccoli (with a tablespoon of butter) and 6 cherry tomatoes (with blue cheese dressing). I got stuck on the tomatoes and although not the best it’s working for now. I’d love to have cups and cups of vegetables, but I stay way under 20g carbs every day and want to keep it that way!

Thanks everyone! I guess my veggies have to be limited.:disappointed: I will admit that’s a tough one but worth it. I will try subtracting fiber once I have more time in. Is there a better app than Myfitness pal to track? I get so hung up on that calorie number because that has been my focus for years using that app.

(Sheryl) #11

That’s awesome! I did not know to do that. Thank you.

(jumpriver) #12

You can also use the Loseit app and it will calculate net carbs for you. You also have to watch the nutrient info that gets pulled up in the apps. Sometimes it will say that, for instance, spinach has no fiber. That’s just not true so you may need to google the nutrient info.

My experience with MFP is that you have to be very careful of the nutrient macros on each item. MFP allows people to create new entries, and they are often incorrect, sometimes grossly incorrect. Best to verify via the USDA Database.

shredded cabbage salad is so low in carbs and so filling. Cabbage is a staple veggie for me, cabbage rolls, cabbage salad.

(Sheryl) #15

Thanks! I will check that app out.

(Sheryl) #16

Ill have to add that in. Im a cauliflower junky. I love it because it subs out rice and potatoes. But since I’ve started on keto i barely eat any vegetables.

(Karen) #17

Tiny bit of sun dried tomatoes for potassium. Or tiny bit of fresh for color. When you are on keto grape tomatoes taste like candy. They are sweet. Moderation.

For what it’s worth, I barely ever include vegetables in my cooking anymore. I don’t miss them, and my health has not taken any sort of negative dive. Vegetables are romanticized when in fact they offer little bioavailable nutrients.

I do go through phases where it seems like all I want is veggies (normally this is during my luteal phase before my period). But even if I go “overboard” with carbs, I even it out during the rest of my cycle.

You also may be able to handle slightly higher carbs than others, especially if they’re in the form of veggies. Self experiment and see what happens!

I try and get in the greens. I buy into Eric Berg’s philosophy.

Not everyone feels they need this, but I find green veggies make my tummy feel better. If no veg. Works for you, it works.

I like Dr. Berg’s style, too, Karen, but I can’t eat like him. I don’t have enough teeth left to gnaw through that much salad. I can still do some salad but not that much. But I DO eat my veggies and love 'em, especially with extra butter.
