Today I used a keto stick

#1

Hello all.

I’m the type of person that needs to see hard proof of something rather than having a feeling about it. I am on day 6 of the keto lifestyle. I went out today to try and find a keto meter but could only find blood glucose meters. I’m probably just going to buy a keto-mojo online. Anyway- I bought the keto sticks. Reli-On brand.

I know people say it takes weeks to get into actual ketosis, but I just wanted to ask a quick question about it. I used one of the sticks just now and it said I have “trace” or “small” amounts. It was borderline in between the two. Does everyone have ketones in their blood/urine or am I on the right track?

Thank you all.

P.S. I know I shouldn’t be worried about the actual reading, as I have lost weight and I do feel a trillion times better, but I like to actually see a number progression.

If you turn the little stick a different color, then you are spilling ketones in your urine. Congrats! Just be aware that the more adapted that your body becomes at using ketones the less likely you are to see a change in the sticks.

never measured myself in any way…but from I hear…if you test and get at least traces of ketones…you are in ketosis. like a pregnancy test…you either are…or not. I also hear that the pee sticks are less reliable the longer you are doing this…get the mojo thing…people love and rely on that better.

I have been keto-ing for about 6 weeks and on my meter just a couple days ago went from .8/1.3 's to .3/.2’s last night and this morning and feeling like I have fallen out of ketosis. Am fasting today to correct the situation, but my reason for replying is I too use the reli-on sticks and have compared them to my meter readings the last 2 days where I got the exact same readings as you - between trace to moderate. Hope this helps.

I would disagree with this. Most people get into ketosis within days.
It will usually take a while 4-8 weeks, to get fat adapted.
Yes, to start, it is normal to have ketones in your urine. Once your body gets used to using those ketones, they will no longer show up in your urine.

It takes days to get into ketosis, you only have to deplete the glycogen in your muscles. Keto adaptation takes weeks or even months but they’re two different things.

Keto-sticks don’t tell you anything useful about nutritional ketosis. All it tells you is that there’s WASTED Acetoacetate in your urine. Why people insist that this is somehow validating of nutritional ketosis baffles me.

For more info, Volek and Phinney outline why they’re a complete waste of time in “The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living,” pages 164-165.

But hey, it’s fun to pee on sticks.
