Late lunch, first meal of the day besides some coffee (black or BP). Once I eat, I feel like I need to take a nap - it feels like a sugar crash, but my meal is keto/LC. For instance, today was ground venison, turkey slices, havarti cheese, mayo, pesto, and a few pieces of butter lettuce. I’m guestimating 5 gms net carbs. So, why so tired? I have relatively normal energy levels the rest of the time and so this really feels like a crash. I am about 128#, 18% BF, so not trying to lose weight. Lucky to work from home so I can close my eyes for a few min as needed.
Tired crash after eating
Perhaps too much protein in one sitting? Venison and turkey are both very lean and protein dense.
Protein stimulates insilin about half as much as glucose iirc
To be honest, I have that too lately. I am tracking my macros and they are in perfect range- for sure not too much protein. I am confused about that too.
You’re lean enough that you’re going to need to supplement plate fat for your energy requirements. The lean meat needs to be smothered in something fatty to give it balance. And yes, measure a serving of turkey or venison until you can just guess at it.
…also, it sounds like you may be fairly insulin sensitive. That lean protein meal may be giving you a dip in glucose. Do you have away to test it?
I’ve tracked for a long time, so when I say ‘guesstimate’, it is based on having a good sense of portion and macros for foods I eat frequently. This meal was probably closer to 3 net carbs but I didn’t consider the fat content. More fat - yay!
I’m going to try upping fat and lowering protein today and see if that helps. I feel really alert on empty stomach, so there must be something going on with the meal choices I am making. This is all helpful - thanks again.
Don’t forget that when you eat your body devotes energy to digestion. When fasting it’s obviously not. I get the same way some times after a refeed.
I tried to say that I am getting very tired after meals too, and I know from tracking that I don’t have too much protein. So I can’t emagine protein is the issue. I did not dismissed your feelings about how much you eat. I simply track because it helps me staying focused and to feel in control
Ketones too if you have the meter for it. Before meal and at around 1 and 2 hours after meal or whenever it is you get tired.
When you say you for sure aren’t getting too much protein, what are you basing that off of? Maybe it’s your body’s way of telling you it actually needs less than your calculation.
I know - I assumed you had good intentions with what you wrote While i was pretty close on the net carbs, I was underestimating protein and fat, so it was a good reminder to go in and track. It makes sense to track when something weird is going on, and I appreciate the suggestion.
No ketone meter.
It seems likely I need to dial back on protein and up the fat. Today ate 7 oz. of venison roast with fat, 5 oz. avocado, 1 oz. cotija cheese, 1 tbsp HWC for lunch today and felt much better. I know this is too much venison, but I hated for it to go to waste (it was a lovely slow-cooker roast with lots of juice and mushrooms).
So what does one do if your blood sugar is dropping? I eat 2 hard boiled eggs for breakfast with a tablespoon of mayonnaise. I get very foggy and tired after? any suggestions please? thanks!
Molly- I know this is an older post but how are you, doing now? Did changing your macros make you feel better? I’m a super newbie and am tired after meals as well
This used to happen to me when I was overeating on keto. It doesn’t happen now that I restrict calories. Don’t know if that’s your situation, just throwing this out there.
