Tips from beer drinkers

#1

I reside in Las Vegas, pool season is upon us and lets just say I’ve been known to have a cold one, or two, or three, or four . . . around the pool. Looking for tips from keto beer drinkers. I’m guessing the key to drinking beer on a keto lifestyle is probably obvious, low carb beer e.g. Miller Lite and moderation.

Been keto going on seven months, I’m still trying to lose weight, down to my last 15 lbs.

Thanks for any tips!

3 weeks in here and this has a challenge for me. I love craft beer, specially great IPAs. Needless to say, at a hefty 12-17 carbs per bottle, I haven’t had one. I actually detest light beer but its really the only thing I see ok in the beer world. There is a gluten free beer I want to try with 5 carbs per bottle called omission ultimate light golden ale. I like their pale ale so I hope the “light” beer is better than mich ultra.

My tip is abstinence from beer. At least till your fully fat adapted, then occasionally a low carb like Miller Lite once in a blue moon out for dinner is okay. Otherwise it could be a issue with stalling weight loss.

This is a big downside for me too. We enjoy visiting the small local brew pubs all the time and going keto put a screeching stop to it.

I suspect there are no real ways to integrate beer into a keto diet… beer is called ‘liquid bread’ after all. I have had an occasional glass of dry red wine and also had some vodka with unsweetened tea instead. It’s not beer, but neither is anything low carb they call beer.

I’m not sure I agree completely that beer can have no place. I’ve had wine, beer and vodka. Whether this has hindered me, sure…no idea. With that said, I have started keeping an eye on my ketones. When I drink, my body does pretty much shut off ketone production. In the next 24 hours I am back up to 3ish mmol. A WOE that does not allow me to have the ocassional beer or wine, probably will not be sustainable for me. I’m just one body though, and I am willing to accept the trade offs. You will need to decide if you are willing to deal with the trade offs or not!

I like to brew my own beer, so this has been a particularly thorny issue with me. Homebrew is generally heavier than mass produced beer, so I really can’t find a place for it in my diet right now. I’m thinking the best I’ll be able to do is wait until I’m well fat adapted before I drink any, and then I’ll just have to be ready to pay the penalty for the next couple of days. I had already relegated my beer drinking to weekends before I went keto, so maybe once I’m ready I’ll be able to find a place for it a couple of times a month without hurting myself too badly. It helps that I don’t have a lot of weight to lose to start with and I have no health issues that I’m trying to reverse with keto. My main reason for getting into this WOE to start with is the muscle preservation, mental clarity, and appetite suppression it offers.

I used to brew my own, too. That’s when I changed from liking light beer to dark beer.

Now I say, “If you can see through it, it’s not worth drinking.”

But, I really can’t justify the carbs anymore. It is, after all, “liquid bread.”

So, while I love a good dark imperial stout, I choose a glass a red wine, instead. And, that only once a month, or so.

I’m 3 months in and 32 lbs lost thus far. I have regularly consumed beer since the beginning. I drink either Michelob ultra, Miller lite, or the new corona premier, all low carb. Of course I make sure that it fits into my macros for the day, so for me beer hasn’t had any effect on me loosing the pounds, everyone is different of course you just have to experiment and see what works best for you!!!

Well, the silver lining is that once you’ve been on Keto for a while, it takes a lot less alcohol to get a buzz, from what I hear.

This is so true. I sculled a beer last week as opposed to sipping on it for hours and I was BLIND. Lol.

I like to drink 1 NO CARB Beer a day, burleigh big head, it’s Australian and not tooo bad.
