TIFU by drinking too much magnesium

After listening to a podcast about the benefits of magnesium and how we as people usually don’t get enough, I decided to increase my magnesium intake by putting more in my ketoade. I use powdered mag citrate, so instead of 1/2 tsp per bottle I did a whole tsp. In all 5 24oz bottles I usually drink.

The floodgates opened about a day later. Guess it was a bit too much. Good news is, I lost 3 pounds in about 36 hours. Bad news is I hurt my lower back muscles from all the, um, “movement” and now I’m home unable to stand because of the back pain!!

I’ll be ok but I feel like a moron for basically self inflicting a back injury from diarrhea!!

On a side note, would love it if the dudes would do a show about electrolytes and how much we really need! Trying to figure it out myself had some disastrous results!

That’s not Ketoade. That’s homemade Milk of Magnesia !

Now you know what to do (at a lower dose) if you get keto-constipated

The ratio of sodium to potassium needed is estimated to be between 1:1 & 2:1 on keto per Phinney/Volek. For that reason I made my own lite salt at a ratio of 1.6:1 sodium to potassium and then I just add in Natural Calm magnesium to the bottle as I feel I need it. Magnesium is supposed to be around 350mg per day so I guess what I need to supplement based on the day’s food intake. Just play around and see how you feel, it doesn’t have to be rocket surgery. They also make transdermal magnesium spray which I like. Some of the oral supplements are poorly absorbed, with Mag Citrate being the worst offender hence the Harry Dunn factor.

Oh, I’m glad you posted it - I would laugh myself silly if it wasn’t so true!
