This.
After years of low carb and no regular sweets I am still trying to figure out how to celebrate (especially family events) without being food-dependent. It’s not that I don’t believe in celebrations. My niece is getting married in June, I will take a piece of cake and if I like it I will eat it.
But celebrations are still so linked to food in my brain. I feel like I am just starting to rewire this and it is super hard for me.
Thoughts on eating ham at a family gathering?
I spend a lot of time finding ketoed versions of foods I like. I make crackers, mayo, salad dressings, and veggie dishes that are better than any I used to use. I eat wonderful meats, use butter, olive oil and avocado oil with abandonment.
I am a serious foodie so food is related to love, happiness, entertainment, and joy in my head. Luckily, I find keto brings all of that to the table. I love the way I can eat now.
No one I have served my keto foods has issued a single complaint either, in fact, I keep having to print off recipes for them.
Hope everyone is enjoying their ham or lamb if that is your families thing this week end.
We did lamb chops with deviled eggs and salad this year
I didn’t think anyone would care, but I took my own meal to family get together today…someone actually brought up the “keto fad diet” and said their doctor told them to stay away from it, that it causes high cholesterol - I so badly wanted to pull out my phone and log into the forum lol. I decided to take some advice I read on here and simply stated that I don’t eat sugar or starch, I also decided to take care of ME and stayed calm and ketoed on…time will show them and if they are interested and willing to listen then, I will happily share!
Oh, I will bring lots of keto side dishes (of course, not labeled as such): “cheesy” cauliflower for my vegan husband (from a vegan keto cookbook), cheesecake, bacon-wrapped haloumi cheese and asparagus, roasted Brussels sprouts. Maybe more if I have time.
My goal is to stay away from the mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, bread, and desserts.
I do refeeding at the times I want to get lean meaning I pig out once a week, at least, then back to keto and exercise. If you’ve been on keto for years and you’re at your goal weight, treating yourself on some occasions shouldn’t be an issue. One cheat may knock you out of ketosis but it’s not going to undo your progress at all if you’re at maintenance. And the longer you’ve been fat adapted the more effort it takes to get knocked out of that state.
Thanks so much to all of you for your responses. I feel very ready to tackle this event.
Two pounds will pass right through you. Water and food is all the scale gets in a day.
