Thoughts on carbing up

I’ve been keto very strictly for over 3 my months up until this past weekend. The wife wanted a Blizzard from Dairy Queen and I had a ”screw it” additude. Well this week has been little different because I’ve went straight back to my 18-6 IF and today I’m down 5 pounds since Monday. The interesting thing is I’ve been right at 247-248 for over a month. I know weight isn’t everything but it is something. Anybody else have an experience like this where weight loss started again after a bad eating decision?

Hi - just like on the last 2KD episode, they talk about shaking things up (in your case, blizzarding  )

It’s good for the body to get surprised, I think it starts different metabolic processing throughout the body. However, I wouldn’t do it with carbs or sugar. I would do it with fat, protein, or different fasting protocols.

Blizzard, good choice! i’m a glutton for ice cream, it is my kryptonite.

i’m curious if this was your only detour, or if this started a week long carb-party? did you have an uptick in weight prior to going back into keto?

i find that when i veer off, i will add on a few pounds, but than quickly drop them once back in keto. usually within a day or 2.

have you tried making fat bomb ice cream? i haven’t but curious on a comparison basis.

KCKO!

I love ice cream too- it’s my kryptonite. I haven’t made any keto ice cream. Do you like it?

Haven’t made it either, but maybe i will have to this weekend. for scientific reasons of course

Let me preface this by saying that I came to keto as a T2DM who never wanted to go back and the strategies below NEVER worked for me, but they do seem to work for others. I’d predict they only work for people with otherwise normal insulin sensitivity and wouldn’t recommend them for anyone with an eating disorder or insulin resistance.

John Keifer, who normally just goes by “Kiefer” from Body IO, currently has 2 solutions - 1) Carb Nite Solution (CNS) and 2) Carb Backloading (CBL) where he intentionally cycles carbs.

If you look on the Internet, you’ll find some videos and podcasts where he’s been interviewed over the years.

I completely agree with @MKChitown, switching it up is a great idea but not with carbs. IF (and it’s a big IF) you can just have the odd meal without falling in to the addiction again and IF you do not have previous issues with T2D and IR then you may want to play around with some of the ‘better’ carbs form time to time. I know it can be a popular approach in the workout world. As with anything else n=1. Most people will say it is a bad idea but if you find it works for you and has no detrimental impact (like kicking you out and keeping you out of ketosis for a while) then play around with it a bit. The whole point really of this woe is to heal any problems you have but then to make it sustainable and that means different things for different people. I would rather see people avoid carb ups if I am honest however I would rather them do it sometimes than ditch keto completely.

The splurge was just dinner where I had 3 flour tortillas with faitas when I’d normally just eat the meat and vegetables and then Dairy Queen was the desert of my bad decisions. I actually didn’t see a weight uptick the next day, I was just on the high end (248) of the range I’d been bouncing between. I also ran 8 miles the day after the splurge, but the running isn’t new.

We do make keto ice cream and it’s awesome. I don’t freeze it solid because it becomes a brick. The key is to keep it in the fridge and put a bowl in the freezer for about an hour and it will be the consistency of a thicker Cool Whip except taste a lot better. We also put cinnamon in ours.
