Those sneaky carbs strike again!

(A ham loving ham! - VA6KD) #1

I have a weekly social breakfast out with friends and after every time, I get kicked out of ketosis for a day or so. I’ve been experimenting by changing the meal around, adding and removing sides, but nothing has stopped the effects. Then it dawned on me this week…It’s the damn coffee cream! At home and work I only use heavy cream (36%) and I had become so used to dropping in a slurp of it in my coffee, that when I came to dumping in a couple of those little thimble-sized coffee creams at breakfast I didn’t even stop to think about the carbs. I looked them up online any they’re listed as 1.8g carbs each. Over the course of the morning I may have four or five cups of coffee and bam! There’s ~20g of carb. Gotta watch those sneaky carbs. I’m taking my own HWC with me next week.

Good catch!

Sneaky little suckers. well done for figuring it out.

#4

Kicked out to what degree? Are you using blood test strips?

(A ham loving ham! - VA6KD) #5

I’m just looking at the pee strips. I get a small-to-medium consistent reading all week, but absolutely zero colour change after having this weekly breaky for at least 12 hours. I know they’re not the best indicator, but it was bothering me that something was causing the change. I’ll know for sure next week when I bring along my own HWC for my coffee.

Ya I wouldn’t use those strips at all. They’re not telling you anything useful, and in this case they’re making your stress over something super minor.

lots of restaurants add milk or half and half to scrambled eggs too.

dont worry your doing great… your learning. In a year you will have it down to a science if you stick with it.

LOL … actually, If you stick it out in a yeah you wont even eat breakfast LOL.

I’ve also heard that some restaurants add pancake batter to their scrambled eggs to make them fluffier!

On the contrary, they prompted him to check the carb content of something he was probably giving him too many carbs. I would call that useful.

Yeah…I’m a bit of a numbers nerd and just like to figure out the ins and outs. No stress, just curiosity.

That’s not cream. It’s “creamer” and I’m not sure what’s in those but it’s not dairy since they sit out for weeks at room temperature. Yeah, drop some butter in your coffee if they have those single servings but make sure it’s real butter first.

I take my own HWC when I go out for social breakfasts, too! Some places actually have HWC, but you can’t count on it. One business trip, I asked for HWC for my coffee in the hotel dining room and the waiter went out and bought it and kept it in the fridge for me as I was going to be there several days. So sweet of that waiter!

sunny side up…no issue with additives,

big tip

(Vivian) #15

Actually, yes. He did get a big tip! In addition he gave me double orders of bacon so that I could take some in a baggie I kept in my purse for lunch later while everyone else in the conference room was eating sandwiches and cookies.
