This sucks

So I’ve been doing really well with the whole Keto thing since Jan. 7, and I’ve lost about 30 lbs! My macros are generally pretty good, but every once in a while I will eat, and right after I immediately have very pain hunger pains. Also, when this happens I cannot stray too far from the toilet. Anybody else having this issue or a cure?!

#2

Is the pain “hunger” pain or gut pain?

Are you describing cramping with diarrhea after eating? Have you determined if there is a particular food or drink that proceeds it? I was having tummy issues with a certain food and once I eliminated it, the problem stopped.

What are you eating?

I was having a struggle for a while a few weeks back (I started a few days before you). I cut down on nuts and added more kale salad, broccoli, and lettuce. Not sure if it was too many nuts or not, but the added veggies seemed to help.

Yeah, as far as what I’m eating, it’s pretty basic. Bacon, cream cheese, eggs, avocado, chicken, red meat (in smaller portions), coconut nut, pork rinds, cheese, leafy greens, etc. (Also, I did learn the hard way about what happens when you have too much coconut oil.)
It’s typically a situation where I feel a little hungry, so I eat. Then after I eat those hunger pains get exponentially worse. For a while I assumed it was an electrolyte imbalance, so I went to drinking some powerade zero, more water, and putting a bit of pink salt under my tongue. The fluids and electrolytes helped some, but I still haven’t been able to determine exactly what the culprit is. I guess I could always just move a desk into the bathroom and get comfortable when it hits. At least then I could be somewhat productive.

I would try an elimination experiment and start with coconut and then dairy. Remove an item for four to five days and see how your body responds. If it’s not the coconut, move on to the dairy and so forth.

Easter we went out to eat and I had meatloaf with some veggies and some water. I came home and made keto chocolate chip cookies, had about 5 of them (so good) and then that night couldn’t sleep, and I had to go to the bathroom,(#2) which is not normal for me and I was in so much pain and I actually threw up so not sure if it was the keto cookies (Erythritol ,{I used 1/2 tsp more than recipe called for} choc, eggs, coconut sugar and baking soda). It was awful!

(Corey) #9

So, it sounds like it’s somewhat normal. I’ll do some experimenting. Thanks, folks!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #10

Hunger pangs are not generally confoundable with gut pain, say from too much gas, but I learned from the forums to ask whether I’m hungry enough to eat a hard boiled egg. If yes, then it’s real hunger.

I suspect, however, from the way you describe what happens, that you are experiencing a reaction to some food. You might try eliminating everything but meat and water (or coffee), and see what happens. If that clears up the problem, try slowly adding foods back, one by one, to see what the culprit might be.

I’m thinking something in the meatloaf? Bread crumbs as a filler, maybe?
Many people add ketchup to their meatloaves, and ketchup has sugar in it.
Also, tomatoes are a nightshade, and intestinal reactions are not uncommon with nightshades for some people.

(traci simpson) #12

Maybe! Didn’t think of that.

Try removing dairy, Did the trick for me!
