My Mom, sister and I all follow a ketogenic diet. Recently my mom and sister have commented about their hair being thinner. I have not noticed this in my own hair. Could this be related to the diet? Do they need supplements? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated! Thank you.
Thinning Hair
I bought some vitamins called Biosil it’s supposed to help with hairloss. I have lost quite a bit of hair. I’ve only been taking it for a week and a half so I will have to see in a month.
Hair loss is a common effect of any change in diet. Make sure to get enough calories, and the problem should reverse itself.
What I’ve read suggests too little calories on keto, and maybe thyroid issue. Not a medical person. Just out there reading.
I just got a haircut a couple of weeks ago. I got it cut shorter than I usually have had it in the past year or two. But I wondered whether it might be thinning. It definitely has been thinning over the years but it’s still pretty full, mostly, which is a wonder because both my dad and older brother have little more than the remnants of the Friar Tuck thing going on.
I dunno, at 53, I’m kinda thinking I’m just thankful for what I have. But if it goes away, I’m definitely gonna just go with the flow rather than resort to the comb-over thing, just not goin’ there.
I agree. I lost some hair. Full disclosure, I’ve had hairdresser tell me I had the fullest head of hair they ever cut, but due to the fineness it doesn’t look that way. I am well over 60, when some people with genetic hair loss see thinning.
I lost hair when I first started doing extended fasting. But after 3 months or so, I noticed I was no longer losing hair but growing it back and it was in excellent shape. I based the loss on the strands in the shower after washing my hair and the increase of hair in my brush. I could tell when it started growing back instead of falling out when the shower drain had less strands and the brush went back to normal amounts in it as well. I also have a “widow’s peak” that was the only place on my head you could tell was thinning, it has filled back in again.
Your body is going to use nutrients to fuel your essentials, like heart and brain functions, hair and nails will take a back seat to their needs when you alter your way of eating. Don’t worry about it, in time it will all balance out for you.
56 year old male here, I been on keto for about 1 1/2 years. I might have notice a slight initial hair thinning if any at all (it was an impression I gained from noticing loose grey hairs), but I’ve always had very thick hair and seems to be spared from male pattern baldness.
This is the thing though, there does seem to be a natural testosterone boost when going keto, and that likely would apply to women as well as men… So, if the keto libeto effect is true as I suspect it is, then i would not be surprised to find if it led to a mild thinning of head hair to those who are susceptible.
Thanks everyone. Lots of thought provoking information. I will definitely do more reading.
