The very hungry catterpillar (me!)

(Wenchie) #1

hey you lovies,

I am a bit helpless lately and want to ask you for advice.

I used to be very good an ok with not eating so much. Infact I got sure enought that I can got without food long enought to do a fast. Unfortunately since a week or so I could tip over cows and eat them completely. Whats wrong with me?

I am over month keto now, stick religiously to my makros, dink water like a horse and use salt and all that… but I am SO SO hungry all the time :frowning:

PS: I stay with in my recomendet calories and again I don`t eat carbs or fall out of my makros. And I have not cheated once… even though I would kill for a good couple of well fried english Chips… with gravy :stuck_out_tongue:
Anybody had the same? How did you get out of it?

Thanks ketofreind

Usually that’s a sigh of not eating enough fat. But, before coming to that conclusion, can you describe you typical daily meals and snacks? This will help us give you better advice.

(Wenchie) #3

sure love

ist BP coffee for breakfast
nuts and very few berries in the Office
mix of meats and cheese or lunch… mostly with eggs, Avocado, olive oil
and for tea ist mostly veggies (some) with good buttery sauces and meat (fried in good coco oil)

my makros are set to 5% carbs, 15% Proteins and 80% fat. Most days I stay in this… and I also am pretty close to my calories… :flushed:

oh and I eat no sweeteners or anything… I am worried they would bring up Insuline just by looking at them :sunglasses:

it Needs to go away! I really want to fast…

oh I eat the last meal before 6pm and get my BP on about 7:30… not sure if that matters

I’ve heard it said many times on this forum, but I think it applies here as well, don’t sweat the calories. Take a couple of days and increase your calories by eating more fat, maybe a little more protein, but keep the carbs under 20 grams and see what happens. Put butter on everything! I think you’re just not eating enough fat right now. That will probably change as your body does

So, what’s your magic magic number? Hunger can be caused by not eating enough, especially not enough fat. I’d recommend not counting calories and see how you feel. Your priority is to deal with the hunger, imo.

Its 1960 kcal :unicorn:

Don’t stress, just stick to your macros and eat when you’re hungry. Your appetite will wax and wane in response to your body’s needs. Forget the calories. That was the hardest adjustment for me, letting go of the value of calories. It’s been drummed into us for so long, that it takes a while to accept that they don’t mean shit!

(James storie) #8

This is probably too restrictive in the begining. I’d definitely up the calories, actually, the only thing I would track would be carbs. Eat until you are full! Forget about the old way of eating less than you think you need so you don’t over eat. That doesn’t work on keto. As you become fat adapted you will begin to interment fast without trying. When this happens, go with it. Your fat loss will increase because your body is happily consuming your stores. The main thing IMO is to take it easy and enjoy yourself. I love this way of eating!

(Wenchie) #9

Thanks Kate… I will work on that. I still feel like I need to stop, even though I feel hungry. I justbwonder what changed

(Wenchie) #10

But I would think I am fat adapted after over a month? Maybe I got that wrong ?

(anon) #11

It’s probably just your body working things out. Keep an eye on it, but I’m sure it’ll settle down. Fat adaption takes longer than people think…not to be confused with reduced appetite. For some it can take up to 6 months to become fully fat adapted.

(James storie) #12

You may be leaning in that direction, but by restricting your calories from the beginning your body my be reacting as if you are starving. If you have spent years dieting, then your metabolism is likely broken. It needs to be nourished, not restricted. The more broken you are, the longer it’s going to take to fix. I’m 2.5 years into this WOE, and I’ve lost around 50 pounds. I’ve had my ups and downs. It’s different for everybody, but the main key is controlling insulin. You do this and you will lose weight and feel great!

I agree with the others, if you’re hungry, EAT. And focus on eating fat. I’m wondering if there are other factors that caused this shift in hunger. Are you becoming more physically active? I added in swimming laps to my routine this week and I was hungrier for a few days after. I also find I have more hunger the day after I lift weights, so… I eat  I keep my carbohydrate as close to net 5 as possible, my protein around .55 grams per pound LBM. Fat? I literally eat to satiety. Sometimes that means a lot of fat. I’m ok with that because I am keenly aware the ketogenic diet does not work by calorie restriction, but rather by hormone balance.

KCKO

I feel like being “hungry” is seen as a negative. When you’re feeling hunger, maybe your body is saying, “Hey, that’s good stuff you’re giving me and I have some work to do, so keep it coming!” I would be willing to guess that if you eat your keto meals to satiety for a while (weeks, months) you’ll eventually get to where you just don’t feel as hungry and you can slip into fasting. From what I’ve read, the body uses this new time to do some repairing, so jumping into fasting after a month may be a little too much too fast. It sounds like you’re knocking it out of the park, so good on you! I agree with the calorie restriction not really being necessary - again - maybe your body is busy about doing some repairs and needs more building blocks to use.

Thats the next thing that concerns me to be honest… I lost my energy and also got worse with my depression. I just really wonder whats up thats all.

(Wenchie) #16

Thanks for all the kind advises. I will just go on and see what happens.
It just feels so odd when you been there for longer now (in the podcasts Carl did his fast about the time I am in now and was so excited  so I wanted to try too) and all was good and all the sudden you bump back to all the cravings (not carbs… just food) and the general low you came from. A week a go I agreed wirh @Groversaurus to fast this weekend and was totally ready for it and this week I felt like I can’t go 2 hrs without hitting my teeth in some food. But I will just stay calm and Keto on
Thanks everybody

(eat more) #17

i just want to echo everyone else saying to eat more (fat)…especially with the hunger, lack of energy, and mood getting worse that you are experiencing
i believe it took me longer (at least 2+ months) to become genuinely fat adapted because i was eating too little in the early days/weeks/month…sometimes i still question if i am fat adapted LOL

i still have days (like yesterday) that i want to eat everything in sight…and days i fast without effort…who knows what’s going on in there LOL

I’m late to this post, but have to say that I am 4.5 months in and suddenly I’m really hungry. So it can happen any time. I thought it might be my sweetener issue, but I’ve been good with no sweeteners and still hungry. So I’ve decided to just eat. Going to try and keep to around 20 net carbs, but not going to sweat going a bit higher. Logging food, but not adding up til end of day. Not going to count Protein unless I get way over my number. We will see what happens.
