The scale isn't moving and neither is my pant size 😩

Let me start by saying that this way of eating and others like it (Atkins) have always been my go-to diet and I’ve had great success with them. Generally, my husband and I eat low carb but when the cheat days become too frequent and the pounds start creeping up we go back to a very strict low carb diet. I’ve been doing STRICT keto for over 2 months (I wanna lose 45-50lbs) and on a good day have lost 5 lbs. I know, 5 is better than 0 but this is not normal for me! In the past I’ve been able to lose pretty quickly. when I got serious this time I also started lifting weights 6 days a week. After about a month I was always tired and had lost nothing so I switched it up and started walking 2 miles instead. Still nothing…
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Could you post more info? Are you tracking, what are your macros, what are you actually eating?

#3

Are you in ketosis?

It might also be helpful to know the time span in which you’ve been dieting. Age is a factor in this, as hormones diminish over time. As we ketonians know, ā€œit’s not the calories, it’s the hormonesā€.

If you are holding on to 50 pounds of fat, greater insulin resistance may be an issue. Perhaps your body has reached a point where this whole keto enterprise is going to be more of a struggle.

I started keto last October and it took me 3 months to notice any weight loss. Now, I’ve dropped 25 pounds, have 15 more to go. I attribute this to my age and the fact that I’ve been abusing my body for my entire adult life. My poor body just didn’t have it in it to bounce back to good health the way it might have if I were 20.

Patience and persistence will pay off.

Yes. I use ketostix

I’ve been tracking everything with my fitness pal. Carbs are under 20, protein around 50 and fat around 100. I’m not 100% sure what protein and fat should be. I cut out heavy cream in my coffee for a week thinking maybe that was stalling me but it made no difference. I have bpc most mornings and don’t eat until lunch. A few days ago I made some peanut butter keto fat bombs and my husband thinks maybe those affect weight loss…?

I’d like to see your latest labs for thyroid and all your other latest bloodwork too … if you are tired something else could be going on.

This is what I’m afraid of. I’m 29 (30 next month) and I have 4 kids. I gained A LOT with each pregnancy and sometimes lost the weight after but sometimes not. I’ve always struggled with a slow metabolism but have never had trouble losing the weight when I set my mind to it. I’m wondering if my weight has just fluctuated too much over the last 8 years and now it’s just hard to lose. I don’t know. I plan on having my thyroid checked.

(Jenn Monaghan) #9

4 kids, maybe you are too stressed!

Based on your macros, you aren’t even hitting 1200 calories/day. You might try upping your calories a bit. I know my wife won’t lose anything if she is consistently under eating.

I’m having the same issues. I’ve been doing Keto for 5 weeks and even though I read that everyone is different and our bodies are unique, there must be something I’m doing wrong to not have had a normal (but what is normal?) amount of body change. I have lost a few inches and have lost and gained 5 pounds since I started. I watch my caloric intake, I take potassium, magnesium and drink plenty of water. Even though I have never experienced cramps of any sort since starting, I did suffer a headache that lasted two days when I did IF for three days. I added more salt to my food and some to my water and that solved that problem. My macros are 20g carbs but never go over 16g, protein is 74g but never make it past 59g on a dialy, and my fat is 106 but never go over 90g on a daily. I started at 210 on June 16th and the first week lost 3 pounds, then gained them back the following week. I have only lost the 5 pounds that keep creeping back up. I’ve read that you don’t need to exercise on Keto then I read yes you do. My calorie intake is 1250 but I’m way below that on a daily. I’m 46 and don’t have hot flashes, I have a very regular menstrual cycle so not really sure what is the deal with me. I document everything I eat. I don’t have cheat meals or pinch carbs here and there. I am so excited about this new way of eating that I am a faithful follower but it’s pretty difficult to stay optimistic when I don’t see results while others are losing massive water weight, even if water, it’s still weight off. I can’t see the difference in my body yet. I’ve reached out to many online outlets for support and I get asked the same questions: what my macros are, am I counting calories, am I working out, do I drink enough water, electrolytes, everyone is unique, and the most hurtful thing to ever hear from a fellow fat person struggling to be healthy is ā€œYOU WILL FAIL IF YOU’RE NOT PATIENTā€ I am patient and have faith that I will find what’s keeping me from losing weight, but to see that in writing, well it just makes me sad that people can’t offer comfort and just blast negative comments without knowing me. I take it personal because this life style change has been very personal to me. I have my whole family telling me I’m going to die or get sick by eating bacon and butter.
Rant over. Sorry. Just wondering if someone else is going through this. I’m sure there are tons.

I totally feel your pain! I am going to have my thyroid and whatever else checked on Monday and I hope that that will solve whatever the problem is. I think, and I’m no fitness expert, that maybe doing some form of exercise is good even if you just walk every day. Can’t hurt!
As far as your family goes, it’s hard to understand how carbs and fat together affect your body compared to fueling your body with just fat if you’ve never done any research . They are just uninformed. You’re doing great! And I wish you luck!

(Laura Morales) #13

Oh I’ve done alot of research on the Ketogenic diet. It’s one of the reason why I adapted it as a life style change and way of life. I want to be able to live longer. And I know I’m complaining but the benefits have been felt by my brain and body. It’s just something about the scale not moving, my body NOT showing any weight loss, my clothes do feel loser and even though I constantly take pictures, just there is no making me happy. I just had a a physical in December so I’m due another soon. I’ll be looking into my thyroid and possibly menopause? I mean my cycles are super normal and since being on Keto, my cramps and PMS absolutely disappeared. So I do have some benefits. I just want to feel AND look like I’m losing weight.
Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the support!

I have heard of some folks seeing the weight loss resume after removing dairy from the diet. May be something to consider.

This really is what did it for me…figuring out your metabolic deficit.
If you are eating too much fat , your body won’t use your stored fat. And if protein is too high, you’ll spike insulin. It gets tough as you get near a certain point because. I graphed ot out. Then it gets better as LBM increases. Just my way. May or may not help you.

(Allie) #16

Give it time. Sometimes the body needs to fix hidden issues before it can start burning fat.

(jilliangordona) #17

Have you done a sharp increase in your exercise? That may also be a culprit. It sounds counterintuitive, but taxing your bodily heavily with exercise will increase cortisol, and in turn increase insulin and prevent you from losing fat.

From what I’ve read, the threshold for this tends to be be having more than 50lbs to lose, which you don’t, but it’s something to consider.

#18

So does this mean you eat the average metabolic rate of calories and then add the grams of ā€œadditional fatā€?

(Yery Colombón) #19

How do we figure out macros?

(Deb) #20

Sorry for the delay in answering…am on vacation with spotty internet and cell service!

I figure my metabolic deficit for my current weight. I know I want my carbs under at 20 gms and mine personally closer to 10 and consisting of mostly leafy greens so figure those; proteins I figure in around .5 gm per lb of LBM per dayand the rest in fats. If its over or under in calories, it’s usually not by much and not so much that it will make that much of a difference.
On days that I do Zumba, I’ll add more fat; weight days, more protein. I weigh myself every day. I know I will gain the day after cardio. I know I will lose every other day if I eat this way…and lose more if I do a quick weight routine in the morning. I know I lose more if I eat more at lunch and a smaller dinner.

I also know that I have to be more careful about ā€œrefeedingā€ and making darned sure I am not going below my bmr too often or fasting too often, in my case anyways. I started out, and have a family history of low thyroid, and since it didn’t feel like it was working last year, I just quit taking it. Well, I’ve lost 30 lbs. in the past 3 1/2 months anyways but just had bloodwork done and TSH is through the roof! 8.25…super low thyroid. Free T4 was bottomed out too. I feel fine though…like I told my dr. And lost all this weight. So gonna go back on the Synthroid and I carbed up on vacation and will restart my protocol and be more cautious about eating enough.
