The reason for #BoringKeto

(Barbara Greenwood) #1

Hi all,

I’ve been keto nearly 7 months now, doing great, and finally caught up with all the podcasts. I came across the BoringKeto thing… and this week I think I’ve discovered why people think that!

I’m on a 3-day conference, and despite explaining what a very low carb diet is, they really haven’t provided things that worked for me at a lot of the meals. Cold meat and salad. Cold meat and salad. Asked for berries… got plums. Yesterday’s main meal was fish pie - I said it was no good because of the potato. They took that away, and brought me a stuffed pepper. Stuffed with cous cous and sweet potato with a few mushrooms. And the veg on the table was carrots and cabbage. So I ate a pepper, a few bits of mushroom and cabbage. No butter available to make the cabbage tasty.

Anyhow - if you try and eat keto in that sort of setting, of course it’s going to be boring! But put me in my kitchen with free choice of ingredients, and yum!

#BoringKeto is a sarcastic or ironic hashtag.

This is also why a lot of people choose to fast in these situations.

Or pack…no shame in packing food you can eat!

I’ve learned not to give people the instruction of “low carb high fat” or “ketogenic” when they are clearly unfamiliar with it.

I usually give them a specific meal I want served, and say “or equivalent substitute”. Then they use that meal request as a “template”.

For example, I usually request “smoked salmon and boiled eggs, with green leafy salad”. Sometimes they will substitute salmon for canned tuna (it’s cheaper) or baked filet of cod, and sometimes the boiled egg comes like sort of omelette or scramble. The green leafy salad will change (kale or spinach or romaine, etc).

I find it’s better not to try to explain unless someone is really prepared to LISTEN. I find that if i am going to be in a situation where i’m not in charge of food. I make sure I have a supply of purse bacon.

It’s a while since I filled the form in, but I think what I put was “very low Carbohydrate - no grains, potatoes or sugar”. That left open the possibility of being offered unsuitable fruit - though at the time I booked, I wasn’t aware of just how much something like an orange would spike me (blood glucose, I mean - I have type 2 diabetes)

Better this evening, though. The main dish was a meat pie, so I basically got a beef stew with broccoli, asked for some butter for the broccoli. At dessert time people were being offered chocolate gateau with a few raspberries on the side, so I asked for a bowl of raspberries and had them with cream.
