The One Thing That May Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

(Edith) #1

I thought those of you who have put your type 2 diabetes into remission using keto might “enjoy” this article posted on livestrong.com.

insulin sensitivity in subjects decreased dramatically and fasting plasma glucose became normal

Error.

Resistance decreased

Thanks for sharing, but this was disappointing in all the ways I expected.

“After just one week on the 600- to 700-calorie diet, insulin sensitivity in subjects decreased dramatically and fasting plasma glucose became normal. In eight weeks the diabetes was completely reversed. And another perk? Each person lost an average of 33 pounds.”

Leave it to the folks at Livestrong (with their ultra-conventional approach to nutrition) to confuse insulin resistance with insulin sensitivity. Psst, guys, for that calorie-restricted diet to work, sensitivity needs to “increase dramatically.”

I could hear Lance Armstrong himself roid-raging into my ear: “Guys, we’ve gotta get the fat out of our pancreas, and the only way to do that is gonna be by paying more attention than ever to calories in and calories out and pretending that all calories are equal.”

Hooray for a new generation of misinformed diabetics.

P.S. Thanks Edith for warning us by putting “enjoy” in quotation marks.

The diet

3 diet shakes per day and 240 grams of non-starchy vegetables taking in between 600 and 700kcal a day for 8 weeks
volunteers then gradually returned to eating normal food over the next two weeks with very careful instruction on how much to eat
volunteers were seen once a month and supported with an individualized weight maintenance programme over the next 6 months
to keep weight steady after the weight loss, they were eating around one third less than before the study

Sounds Low Carb High Protein.
A before eater of 2400 calories now routinely eats 1600 calories ? Wow … discipline !!!

You’re all forgetting how unsustainable a ketogenic diet is, because it’s so boring we can’t stand to do it long term. Cutting our calories to a quarter of most people’s normal level is soooo much better for us; eating to satiety will never work. We have to suffer, or it’s not good for us, lol!
