After two months back on keto, I’ve had a slip the last few days whilst away. Bread and sweets. Inevitably it’s left me incredibly bloated, but also quite miserable, and fairly blue. Is this to be expected? I’m also just wondering what the best route back is - st into keto/cold turkey? Thanks in advance!
The impact of a slip
First, reflect on what made you slip. What was the root cause? Next time you confront that situation, what better decision will you make?
Then get back on the keto horse.
As theybsay, Keep Calm and Keto On! I think it’s really just the best and most simple advice.
Keep Calm - Don’t beat yourself up, don’t make a big deal. Acknowledge the issue head on so it doesn’t happen again, but don’t make a big deal.
Keto On - Just go on with what you need to be eating as if it didn’t happen. Don’t feed the cravings that may come and they will go away.
Pretty much what the others have advised.
OLR: Own it. Learn from it. Relinquish it.
Then just get straight back into Keto. Drink plenty of water, eat plenty of fat and keep your electrolytes up. Most of all, resist any temptation to devour sugar…it’s a slippery slope. KCKO!
I am planning on being non-keto for a week while on vacation, to enjoy the local foods and be able to eat socially with my trip-mates. and I’m considering what the best approach might be.

can i keep carbs to a minimum (say 100/day) ?

would it make sense to do exogenous ketones? would that help get back into ketosis quickly when I’m back?
Hi - I’m still new, but I would say keep carbs to a minimum as much as you can. Also, I’ve heard exogenous ketones do help in getting you back into ketosis faster. Not sure if that will relate to being fat-adapted quicker, but you will spill more ketones in your blood with exogenous.
In the strictest medical definition ketosis is having levels of ketones in the blood and tissue and exogenous ketones will do that, but that won’t help your body make ketones from fat in the liver. It should help you feel better during the transition back into generating your own ketones because it’s supplying ketones to a brain that got accustomed to using them.
But I think using a concentrated MCT Oil product such as Brain Octane Oil or KetoMCT is a better choice because the C-8 MCT is easily converted to ketones by the body and you don’t have to be concerned with the fact that only 1/2 of the exogenous ketone is actually usable.
Current (March 2017) exogenous ketone products include the left-hand and right-hand versions of the ketone molecule, but the body can only use the right-hand version and there’s no real history on what happens to the unused portion in the long term.
Personal disclaimer, I won’t use any exogenous ketone products at this time and keep plenty of KetoMCT around when I’m looking for a boost.
I may soon start a new topic somewhere, like “Cycling off for a week”, I’d like to see what people have done to both prepare and get them back on as quickly as possible. I’d like to see daily ketone readings from people who have done this and what it would take to get back. For example, maybe as you suggest, taking MCT oil everyday keeps you creating ketones even though you are kicked out of ketosis.
I use that Keto MCT too. Love it, and it definitely boosts my blood ketone readings.
I had the same experience. I decided to eat rice one night and paid for it the next 2 days: I was lethargic, bloated, and just wanted to sleep. Lesson learned, cheat days are very costly. Just get back at it.
This is key, do this before anything else.
'Xactly.
I think you’ll find that most keto warriors just aren’t into paying the awful price anymore. Somewhere along the line, carbs become less “fun” and more “poison” and it isn’t hard at all to Just Say No to all that pain.
I’ve heard other people say that they get sick or don’t feel well after eating carbs. I’ve never had that issue. I could house a large domino pizza in the next 20 minutes if i didn’t care about adding weight to my body. I will take a week off in May, and see how long it takes to get back to ketosis.
If I would do that, every joint of my body would ache for at least a month. And I mean, really ache…like not being able to go up and down stairs.
