So I was doing really well. I would eat one sqaure of dark chocolate even once in awhile as a treat. Then it progressed to eating one piece every night. And somehow it had spiraled out of control…tonight I keep grazing on the bar. I must kick this habit. It is triggering old habits . Tomorrow is a new chocolate free day. Just wanted to share. KCKO!
The chocolate trap
What percentage dark are you eating? I worked my way to 90% and enjoy a little every once in a while (especially with a HWC chaser), but I cant stand to eat more than two squares at a time.
Thanks. I’ve decided to give it up… I have an all or nothing mentality. I convinced myself it was ok since it technically fits into keto and my macros… But it’s been a crutch and it’s time to let it go.
Replace with cheese.
If the chocolate is not in the house, I will not find reasons to eat it.
Pro tip
But no I get you, I am the same with chocolate mousse. It’s hard.
@Hapygirl, I had a week recently where I started consuming 1-2 squares of 80% dark chocolate, then 6 squares, and one night I ate half a bar! I haven’t had any since!
That’s exactly what happened to me! It was fun while it lasted, but I must say goodbye to my delicious friend.
Dark chocolate of the 80-100% kind though has great antioxidants and minimal carbs even if you do eat plenty? One of the biggest challenges from overeating dark choc is digestive, or caffeine related, not carbs? But of course, depends on your daily carb levels and if you’re eating 3 meals a day etc.
I’ve no taste for the dark stuff and prefer Ritter’s bittersweet 50% - which I treat as a semi-highly controlled substance only edible after a sumptuous keto meal which helps in keeping to small quantities. I also use cacao powder in smoothies with avocado and berries and undenatured whey, for the antioxidants and flavor when sweetened a bit w/ erythritol & Stevia.
The thing about chocolate is that it contains PEA, which is a unique substance for the brain - and only produced by the brain in certain euphoric states. So, it can provide a special neurological boost to encourage the keto journey - or be a poison if misused, indeed.
Chocolate also contains theobromine and caffeine, which belong to the family of methylxanthines, which are stimulants. Although theobromine is toxic to some animals, such as dogs, others, such as pet rats, can benefit from the bronchodilating effect of methylxanthines. Other members of the chemical family are theophylline and aminophylline, which are standard medications for rats in respiratory distress. (Rat owners acquire a lot of odd knowledge in the process of learning how to take care of these sweet animals.)
I think a lot of what people like about chocolate comes from the sugar in it. I have little temptation to eat unsweetened chocolate, even though my taste buds have changed enough on keto to find it palatable and even enjoyable these days. (It’s an acquired taste, like coffee.) I suspect it may be the caffeine that attracts me to it, even without sugar.
I don’t know that eating a square or two of dark chocolate a night is a bad thing. Depends on the person, I’d say. Maybe your body is needing something that dark chocolate is offering.
I enjoy 90% cocoa as well, and could easily eat a whole bar if I wanted too. I usually would do 2 squares a night if I have one though.
If you are craving chocolate, you may also be low in Magnesium. Try increasing your Mag and see how you feel.
Is there much magnesium in chocolate? That would be a cool two birds one stone situation.
There’s supposedly enough for your brain to make that connection, me and chocolate used to definitely be in the "problem"category. I obviously still love the crap but I no longer HAVE to have it either.
