Maybe this will pacify vegans who say eating meat promotes animal cruelty and that cattle farming is bad for the planet? Personally, this type of technology horrifies me.
Test Tube Protein
I’m guessing there’s significant overlap between anti-GMO adherents and vegans. Then again, it’s hard to pacify someone who can’t eat delicious food.
Me, too. There are modifying the structure of the food to make it “healthier,” even though we reject mainstream notions of healthy. There will always be a decades-old latency between changes in nutritional health, and what they’re growing in the petri dish.
In a way, this is the next extreme level we’ve taken food, shaped to conform to an ideology.
Interviewer being shown a sample of cow cells: Is the cow still alive?
Scientist: *long pause…Um, we don’t hurt the cow.
Sigh. What kind of chemicals are they using to make the cells differentiate? What’s in the “protein solution” that makes them continue to grow. This says nothing of the physiology of life that lends to the nutrition of meat. I was hoping I’d be dead before this stuff was available, but apparently it’s being promised within a year and a half.
Geeezuz! Another processed and possible GMO food to make more breaks in our chromosomes?
LOL! QFT!
I believe this notion is healthy for the planet but it remains to be seen if it’s healthy for humans. I’m all for stem cell use/experimentation in people who don’t have many options… like blood cancers, diseases and immune disorders, replacing lost limbs etc. I also believe that with ever-expanding populations and farming/grazing lands becoming less and less, that something needs to change… but this? No thank you.
You and me both.
Also, where is the blood? I’m not trying to be gross but meat isn’t just muscle cells and fat cells. There are blood cells and vessels throughout.
I vote that we keep referring to it as “test tube protein” because “lab grown meat” is floating around a lot these days, and although that also sounds gross it does make it sound like the stuff is actually meat.
