Test Results
Thanks Tessy.
Still cannot get over the high glucose reading. Time to invest in a glucometer. Just updated first post. The insulin just came in and it is a low 2.1. Feeling much better about the high glucose reading. ’
Thanks again.
Congrats, I know these first numbers can be such a relief!
I got a similar result with my first keto bloodwork with low HDL and high LDL. Just remember that the LDL is a calculation using a standard based on people who follow the standard American diet. If you are getting any flags on that ratio, it is helpful to note to your clinician that for people in keto, triglycerides are the key number-- good trig levels seem to indicate that the ratio of HDL:LDL is better balanced that the standard formula that is used to calculate LDL will indicate. There is a method of interpreting these numbers called the Iranian method that is allegedly more accurate for calculating cholesterol in ketogenic individuals.
If you get a chance, I suggest getting your b12 and vitamin D levels-- it is crazy how many people, keto or not, are vitamin D deficient!
Congrats! Most people on this forum would kill to get your numbers and very few would complain about a glucose of 108 while having an hbA1C of 5 which means an avg of blood sugar of about 101…
What were your numbers prior to keto?
Thanks JGL. I do supplement daily with Vitamin D and I do eat boat loads of red meat. That said I will try to remember to have those tested next time around.
Thanks Mike, Thanks for the reassurance. I honestly do not know what those numbers are. I did not take those tests prior to going keto in April of 2014. Before going keto I was doing Joel Fuhrman’s Eat To Live diet for 2.5 years but lost a lot of lean muscle mass and felt cognitively off keel. When I stumbled upon the book “Grain Brain” by Perlmutter and “Low Carb” by Phinney and Volek I just had to give the keto thing a try. Needless to say 4 years later LowCarb sometimes Keto seems to be best for me.
There is such a thing as glucose-sparing, which happens in those who are well-fat-adapted. What it means is that the organs capable of using ketone bodies are all doing so, saving the glucose for those organs that absolutely need it. Since your HbA1C is so good, I don’t think you need worry a bit.
You’re welcome. And I do enjoy eating bacon even more than smelling the flowers, lol!
