Talking to the non-keto-informed

(Ryan Tuttle) #1

So over my life and the last few months ive been imbibing all sorts of keto and nutritional info. Although i dont agree with everything i find online i do feel that keto makes a lot of sense and i cant argue with results.

But now i find im out with people and i chat (nutrition is one of my favorite topics) and im flabbergasted by how peoples knowledge is so different than mine now. Im also happy that now i feel very confident i can make the right eating choices whereas before it was a bit of mystery.

Last night i went out to eat with a friend. I had a house salad with blue cheese and water. My friend had prezel bread sticks and a margerita. He offered me a stick and i said no im not eating refined carbs. He then explains to me how healthy prezels are and that he would rather eat carbs than fat.:tired_face: (he said this as i was pouring out the last bit of blue cheese)

I had another similar instance at work. Its kinda frustrating. People are dead set on the idea that carbs are good and fats are bad.

It’s because we have a been raised to believe fat are bad. That’s gonna be hard for people to budge on straight away. I have had to use before and after pictures to make people see that the fat has made me lose body fat. And I also believe some people are not diciplined enough to give up carbs so just blame the fat anyway.

I agree. Just through some more blue cheese on those pieces of :bacon: !

Unexamined opinions

It’s going to take YEARS and a lot of work to counteract the default belief that carbs are good for you. There is so much money supporting that concept and so many years of indoctrination by all hands in the US (and other countries as I understand it).

I would guess that we are a generation or two from getting this type of information out there and before the general public understands they can eat fats without dropping dead 10 minutes later.

We have to realize that the big money is behind pills and cheap food, they will stay in that area until forced out, probably by my 16 year old and those that come after her.

This is nothing new, changes (especially in science) often never occur in the “current group” of scientists, we have to wait for the old timers to retire/die out, those that replace them will begin the transition, we are still on the fringe of the movement.

You have to think that fat was made out to be the devil by the government recommended way of eating decades ago. This has been taught since the 70s!!! So many doctors, dieticians, and nutritionists have been taught fat is bad as the truth. This in turn has spread as the conventional wisdom throughout the population, because the experts can’t be wrong (can they?)

Science is breaking through though. There are more and more studies are being done and the information about fat not being the evil it once was is slowly coming out. The ketogenic diet is also gaining a movement. 5 years ago, most people hadn’t even heard of it. Now if you mention Ketogenic, there are others that have at least heard of it.

As time goes on the low carb way of eating will have more scientific studies backing it, more medical professionals accepting it, and will become more and more mainstream. Even now restaurants are adopting the bunless, lettuce wrapped burger option. When restaurants like Wendy’s, McDonalds, Hardees are doing it, it means there is a significant request for it.

TL:DR Fat = unhealthy has been taught for over 40 years and accepted as gospel. Studies now are coming out that Fat isn’t unhealthy, but will take time to be the conventional wisdom.

I make a game of it when I have to sit through lectures about “heart healthy grains” or any other carb propaganda–a game I call “Bribed or brainwashed?”.

The object of the game is to determine whether the person preaching carb-based health to me has a financial stake in toxic food or is simply repeating what s/he’s been told for decades.

Things ought to change as the word spreads that (a) there’s no scientific proof that fat is bad for you, and that the idea is based on a biased epidemiological study; and (b) the sugar industry has been paying scientists since the nineteen-fifties to say bad things about fat and good things about sugar. Not to mention the fact that the American Heart Association was a nothing little organization until Crisco gave them millions of dollars in the nineteen-forties, and the AHA has been promoting the benefits of vegetable oil ever since–also with no science to back it up.

This came up in my news feed this morning. It starts off good but then ends in still recommending 50% carbs but the gist of it talks about in the a study that says that high carb diets aren’t good for you and higher fat is better (it only says 30%). Original study was published in The Lancet so it has some weight to it. http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/health-and-wellbeing/nutrition/highfat-versus-highcarb-is-the-verdict-finally-in-20170829-gy6w7b.html
