Swollen hands and ankles

(Rachel) #1

I’m fairly new to keto…about 2 months in. Things have been going really well until about a week ago when I started to have joint pain. This is something completely new to me…then a couple of days ago it started to get worse and today my hands and ankles are Swollen!?! Only ever had swollen ankles when I was pregnant.
I’m wondering if my electrolytes are out of balance or if I should drink more water, or salt my water? Any ideas? Or experience with this? It’s not hot here and I’ve been eating the same…

It may sound contradictory, but it could be too much salt … or not enough salt. Those electrolytes have a pretty delicate balancing act. Are you drinking plenty of water? If so, try decreasing salt first, then increasing. Are you supplementing Potassium? You may be getting too much. I don’t know enough about how salt regulates it - I need to get the book “The Salt Fix” and read the darn thing.

One thing for sure - only change one variable at a time as you try to ascertain the problem. Give each change a day or two. Good luck, let us know how you’re doing, and KCKO.

I got a little less swelling using some, not lots, light salt. You need your potassium/sodium balanced, sometime. Maybe?

Might be some connection (highly speculative) here? (besides the sodium, potassium and magnesium axis {very important})

”…I had been thinking that the problem wasn’t that I was getting too little protein, but rather, that my body was turning it all into glucose. …” …More (in-house quote)

…And here (in-house quote)

Good video (think Doctors are infallible?)

I was just reading this earlier today…i think this could be the problem as I thought my protein was a little on the low side but I wasn’t aware of the problems it could cause. I will try to get more protein in my diet and see if it helps. I’m also trying to drink more water. Thank you!

Interesting! Ordered Serrapeptase

Karen, I’ll be watching for your results. Spent all morning reading the salt threads and what I could find on the internet at large. I dug out my iodine and measured out a 1/4 teaspoon of Celtic salt. Wondering what to expect as I up the salt and try to re-salt a body that’s been on low salt mode for 10+ years.

Dr. Berg left a few things out about Serrapeptase; it not only cleans out scar tissue on internal organs and other things, it also breaks plaque and calcium or non-living tissue build up on the arterial walls; the silkworms saliva is an enzyme (Serratia) that has to break through the cocoon wall (obviously non-living tissue or substance?) before it becomes a moth\butterfly (I think it becomes more of a moth than a butterfly though…lol)!

I had been following the research on this particular enzyme long before it was commercially available!

The other protocol is usually in conjunction with Nattokinase made from fermented soy beans and or MK2 (fat soluble vitamin K) and Garlic pills!

This guy (Benedick Howard) has done a lot of research (self-experimenter\certified nutritionist) on the subject and cites various research entitled “NOT USING SERRAPEPTASE?”

In my research, when I was considering the natural product industry’s new serrapeptase because of Dr. Berg’s video, I subsequently learned that the ancient superfood Ginger delivers same enzymatic/circulatory/absorption/scar removal magic without involving silk worms and intense high tech processing - and at 1/4 the price… just fyi!

Many reviews of Ginger on certain Amazon listings from women who’ve experienced significant healing of scars and blockages. And it has a long usage in eastern medicine (ayurveda and traditional Chinese) for female rejuvenation and fertility (for males, ginseng and other herbs are the go to),

For me personally, I prefer the lowest tech and most old fashioned stuff possible when it comes to supplements - but that’s just me!

Wow did not know that! I knew there had to be something similar or a sister type substance occurring in nature…lol!

Yeah - I was happily amazed again at Ginger when I remembered certain things and researched it further. The natural products industry is a huge industry and I’ve worked in relationship w/it in a couple of ways and learned how frequently it is (ironically) just like other industries, with certain natural company founders and spokespersons not all that healthy in body or mind or ethics.

So, I’m VERY circumspect and picky about whose profits I’m boosting in any way. There are some high-integrity companies out there - with healthy & humble founders and/or reps who are actually healers and/or respectful ethnobotanists… like, Mountain Rose Herbals, Nature’s Way, Frontier Herbs, Traditional Medicinals, Golden Flower Chinese Herbs/Crane Herbs, etc. On the other hand, there are others who may make a high quality lab extracts or are media spokespeople on behalf of botanicals - but are narcissistic abusers to their actual staff. Also, there are those who import adulterated/tainted ingredients or are exporters of such and care little about its real dangers to human life, etc. Same in the food industry! A range of ethics and values and profits…

My Ginger comes Monday. I 'll, not sure I’ll take as much as you. Should work up to it.

I’ve recently reduced my morning dose w/ fatty coffee down to one cap instead of two (followed by two caps with next meal/meals) because was having too much appetite suppression and stuck in a OMAD pattern but needed to switch to TMAD for more protein to help move water - and for female post 40 IF maximization. So far so good!

Hi Karen. I’ve been hunting through the forums because after 5 months on keto my feet and ankles have started swelling again. I’d had to buy new shoes because I was slopping around in my old ones but now I seem to be back at square one. I’ve lost over 40 lbs so I’m really disappointed. I see you were trying a few things. Did ginger work for you?

(Leslie) #15

I’m really sorry to hear that you are still struggling. I was also several months into my keto journey when my ankles became severely swollen and I became very worried.
I consulted a keto friendly nutritionist and she recommended several things that had an almost instant effect.

I dropped the HWC from my first meal of the day
I added in fermented tea, roasted salted sea weed, spirulina and matcha. I also upped my sodium, magnesium and apple cider vinegar. My water has real lemon juice in it all day long as well

I appreciate the information Dr. Berg offers regarding inflammatory foods

Keto is wonderful and needs regular tweaking to work properly
Every one of us is a special snowflake and so we each need to find our sweet spot
My problems remain resolved as long as I eat this mineral balanced keto. If I leave something out for more than one day, my ankles start to swell again
Sometimes I have to remind myself to have enough salt because I’m still in the mindset of salt lightly. When we have low blood insulin levels our kidneys will clear any salt we don’t need on board so salt is not dangerous like we have been told

I hope you find this helpful
Keep calm and keto on

(Karen) #16

Not really. A recent fast seemed to help, and I’m taking serrapeptase.

Thank you both for your responses. I shall keep tweeking and KCKO

I have found that a combination of: TMAD whenever possible (thus getting in around 60 grams of protein a day) plus Ginger supplemention (2 caps 2-3 times a day) has helped me a lot - over months, not instantly.

(mags) #19

I bought ginger a while ago. Next task is to start actually using it! I do a lot of IF and try to do an EF once a week and think I read that ginger is not good on an empty stomach. Did I imagine that?

#20

Yeah - I wouldn’t take it on a totally empty stomach - it has a huge kick! I take it with my fatty coffee with no problem though. And usually close to or with my other meal or meals. I like to take it with my grassfeed liver capsules when I break an IF, etc. :sparkles:
