wondering if too much stevia can knock you out of Ketosis? And if so… how long does it take to get back in?
Sweetener- Stevia
cant. Plain and simple. even a cup of **PURE ** stevia extract. If its powderd with bulking agents like " dextrose " than possibly but it would take lots of packets in order too happen
Thanks for the info! I was hoping to find a good stevia based cream soda…
I’ve been mixing Torani sugar free vanilla syrup with Perrier and a tablespoon of cream… it’s so good!! But I’m worried it might be knocking me out of Ketosis…it’s made with Splenda… can Splenda knock you out of Ketosis?
Olny in powderd form!
like the little yellow packets, I would recommend just using diet root beer
Its cheaper and more easy
1 can of regular diet root bear + dash of pink Himalayan salt + 1 tbsp of heavy cream
*add a packet of great value stevia / truvia / swerve
Sweeteners are a complex issue and there is much to research in terms of personal reactions to the various types.
Stevia is generally not known for knocking people out of ketosis, though many dislike a perceived metallic aftertaste. Note the as kidketo said, many of the crystallized versions have bulking agents that are often non-stevia sweeteners.
Swerve that was mentioned is mostly Erythritol, different and seen as one of the safest sweeteners and great for cooking in granulated and powdered forms.
Splenda is Sucralose and made out of sugar (weirdly) and has been shown to have far more calories/glucose than they claim. It is made by big sugar as their hedge against sugar’s decline. For that matter, so is Truvia.
All of these are ‘natural sweeteners’ since they come from natural sources - plants, trees, etc.
The AceK and aspartame are artificial chemical sweeteners which most people don’t have a reaction to like KK BUT his 15 year old, not-so-deranged metabolism isn’t yours so you might want to track your reactions.
Get a few different kinds and see what reactions you have and how you like the tastes. They even vary by brand so it could take some time.
Zevia and Virgils both seem to make a stevia sweetened Cream Soda.
You could even make your own with these various flavors of drops…

Some people do have trouble with stevia so judge it by how it affects you personally.
Be careful with ace k…it may not do anything to bg, but it can sure make insulin spike!
Thanks for the information… I’m having a hard time determining if I’m reacting to stevia or not. I have been Keto for 2 months and started using Keto sticks about a month into the diet. I was doing great and then had a full on cheat day last Sunday. I decided to wait and see how long it took my body to go back into Ketosis without using any exogenous ketones. On Wednesday I started to finally show a little pink — but I keep going from trace to negative ever since.
I’ve been extremely diligent to keep my net carbs around 15 and my total carbs under 30. And I’m still just barely showing any ketones.
The only thing I can think of is the stevia or Splenda… because other than NOT having Wine every night that’s the only thing I’m doing that is different. (I stopped having wine to hopefully get back into Ketosis more quickly).
I hear Keto sticks aren’t accurate — but a week ago I was registering and now I’m not…
I don’t know what to think!
If you consider ketosis as producing (rather than using ketones) from burning fat, then taking exogenous ketones will never ‘put you in ketosis’. In fact they will prevent it since your body will default to burning them before making them out of fat.
This is exactly what you should be doing. KCKO and all that
Not only are they not accurate, they are useless as you get further along. They only record spilled or wasted ketones, and are NOT a measure of production, just ineffective usage. As you get better at using them, they will be used as fuel and NOT spilled in pee so you should expect them to disappear from the stix. This is a GOOD thing. Remember, ketones are NOT the objective, they are the symptom of keto fat adaptation.
It is unlikely that stevia is ‘kicking you out of ketosis’. Splenda might but probably not. If you are using stix to measure this then is probably a NON-problem. You are probably still in ketosis, just not measured on the stix. Be pleased that the stix no longer ‘work’ since this suggests proper fat adaptation… and keep up the awesome work!!
Artificial sweeteners are very idiopathic. Some elicit reactions in some folks, others don’t. The only way to know for sure is to n=1 testing.
Fortunately, testing is simple. Measure your blood glucose then drink a fairly large dose of the sweetner mixed in plain water. Re-measure your BG in 30 minutes. If there is a significant increase or decrease, then the sweetner is not benign for you.
Thanks for the info 4dml… I’m new to all of this so please bear with me if this is a stupid question…
In order to check my glucose, do I have to have a diabetes testing kit? (Like the blood kind?)
Yes. But like I said, I don’t think this is an issue. I personally would not start pricking my finger just to investigate sweeteners that are most likely not a problem but if you want to track BG anyway, go for it.
Every neighborhood drugstore, Walmart, Target, etc. sell glucometers and the required strips. Since you’re not diabetic, any cheap one will be sufficient for your purpose. Here’s the one I use, there are better ones available:
If you want to track blood ketones, a different meter is required that is significantly more expensive. There are only a few choices. Here’s the one I use:
What’s considered a significant change? I tested my glucose and it was 88, then 30 minutes after stevia it dropped to 77.
That could be significant, but it is also within a glucometer’s margin of error. Repeat the test a couple of times (on different days). If the results are similar, then stevia elicits a response in you.
Here are a couple of videos demonstrating n=1 testing.
