Sweet potatoes

(Syeda) #1

Hey guys
Hope everyone is well
I was just wondering can I eat sweet potatoes, I really love them and a couple of years I lost weight on a low carbs not keto but low carb and I’d eat one a day. Are they ok on keto

Sweet potatoes are about 20% net carbs so 100g would be your total daily carb allowance.

Depends on your carb allowance. 20g is just a rule of thumb, pretty much guaranteed to get someone into ketosis if they had/have insulin resistance. I allow myself about 50g/day.

Some days I’m still tempted, though  If only I could get myself to believe that “If It Fits Your Macros” rubbish…

My answer is YES you can eat them - but with the obvious caveat: as long as you only eat a small portion (like 1-2 ounces in a higher carb day, or 3-4 ounces for OMAD depending on your carb limits).

If you’re not 100% fat adapted or you’ve had a compulsive food addiction in the past, I’d say avoid it. Otherwise, if you’re sure you can bake a sweet potato, cool it, portion it out, and put the extra away in the fridge then go for it.

I buy Terra Chips sweet potato chips and mixed heirloom potato chips (they have sunflower oil, which I generally avoid, but this is an exception)- and keep to a small handful portion of them which I eat along with a main meal for Crunch Factor every few weeks.

Since going keto I’ve not bought whole sweet potatoes, just because I’d like to be sure I don’t eat an entire sweet potato in one sitting unless during the winter holidays (which I’m going to treat myself this Christmas I think…). I love all kinds of potatoes, and, I’m trying to prevent getting derailed by them!!! Pre-keto I used to have a huge capacity for sweet potatoes/all potatoes, in addition to rice and pasta, and I think it had something to do with my bodyfat baseline getting fatter rapidly when I hit 49 lol.

So far so good, I’ve not caved to baked or boiled potatoes of any kind in over a year of keto. Just the occasional serving of crunchy Terra chips, which I have no problem keeping to the serving size and using as sort of crunchy condiment with a main meal - and leaving the remainder in the bag on top of the fridge for another day.

Re winter hols, I also love pumpkin… which has half the carbs of sweet potato! Simple Mills has an almond flour pumpkin bread/muffin mix that’s pretty good (the almond flour though increases the carbs, so alas one has to keep to the small serving AGAIN). I add 1-2 teaspoons of ground cardamom and cinnamon, or, garam masala, to it though, because it’s kind of bland. Oven roasted cooking pumpkin and other winter squash with butter & spices though…mmmMMM, and more generous portion sizes!
