I have started keto… .Again. I did it two years ago, and had results, but stopped. I am starting it again, but my breath is very sweet tasting a few days in (I would not say fruity). Is that normal?
Sweet breath on keto?
My guess is that it’s possibly acetone that you’re tasting, from your breath. It has a fruity smell, as well as a somewhat sweetish taste. (And yes, acetone is popularly known as nail-polish remover, but it is one of the three ketone bodies that the liver produces, some of it directly, but a lot of it as a breakdown product of acetoacetate, one of the other ketone bodies.)
Depending on how long it’s been since you restarted your ketogenic diet, the sweet taste will probably gradually disappear. If it doesn’t, at that point you should consider seeing a physician. Especially if your urine appears to be sweet, as well—in which case, ask your doctor to test you for Type I diabetes. While the onset of Type I generally begins in childhood, it is possible to develop it in adulthood. There is a radiologist in Australia, Dr. Troy Stapleton, who developed Type I diabetes at age 40. You might enjoy checking out a couple of presentations, available on YouTube, that he made to various Low Carb Down Under conferences (as far as I know, they are still available on the LCDU channel).
Thank you! I hoped it was the acetone. I just didn’t remember it from when I was previously keto-ing.
