Hey guys! I’ve been reading this forum and it has helped me so much to stick to this lifestyle. But in India a huge issue I faced is healthy and keto friendly snacking options. Looking into it I thought I should know if it’s just me or everyone here is sailing in the same boat! I’ve started this survey to understand it more deeply and have a statistical insight into it. Please fill it out and let’s try to come out of this problem together!
Survey on Keto-Snacking options in India
It’s not a problem. The best keto snack option: Don’t. If you’re hungry between meals eat more at meals.
yes! But, this problem is contextual, In India in most of the places we dont even get too many options in cheese, we only have processed cheese and mozzarella which makes it very difficult to cook something up quickly, not just that but we don’t get lettuces, asparagus, and many other options which western countries easily get. Plus many households are vegeterian. thus this need of ordering some snacks online.
Those are different issues than ‘snacking’. One of the primary objectives of keto is to minimize insulin ups and downs. This is accomplished primarily by reducing carb intake to a very low level. On this forum the recommendation is sub-20 grams of carbs per day. That keeps glucose under control. In addition, every time you eat, insulin gets stimulated and secreted. Confining insulin response to 1-3 meals per day is better than stimulating insulin with multiple small ‘snacks’ in addition. Hence, the recommendation to eat more at meals so you don’t feel hungry between and eat ‘snacks’. If you ‘graze’ all day, insulin will interfere with ketosis and defeat the purposes of eating keto.
I am in the confines of my macros. I have as much as 10-12 gram carbs everyday, not net, but total. But I still feel when I feel extremely hungry I should have something handy to eat than making an entire meal which isn’t the need of the hour.
See, all the top choices of food listed in this link like pecan nuts, asparagus, etc aren’t available around me. I specifically talking about India
Thanks for the additional info. In your description you say you’ve been eating keto for a couple of weeks and you’ve lost 12 pounds. Even if some/most of it was water, that’s a lot of weight to lose in two weeks. Have you been fasting? Fasting for a few days is one way to get into ketosis quickly, but once in ketosis, you start to eat again. Keto is not a calorie restricted weight-loss diet. It’s a metabolic normalization process that usually leads to weight normalization as well - eventually. But a lot of other stuff happens at the same time. Not eating enough will get in the way.
Ketosis does not cause you to feel ‘extremely hungry’ even when you miss a few meals or even fast for a day or two. ‘Extreme hunger’ is generally characteristic of carb hunger - meaning low glucose and insulin trigger the ‘feed me’ signal. That doesn’t happen in ketosis because you’re already burning ketones and fatty acids and if you miss a few meals your metabolism just seamlessly makes up the difference by utilizing fat from your body stores. If you’re trying to lose weight, that’s what you want it to do, I presume.
I would be interested to know how you manage to keep your total carbs at 10-12 per day eating a vegetarian regimen. A whole lot of folks on this forum don’t manage to do so eating little to no vegetables, grains or legumes at all. So if you’ve discovered something the rest of us don’t know, please enlighten us. You would make a lot of folks very happy.
Without know what or how much you’re eating, I can’t suggest specifically what might help. But I suspect you’re probably eating more carbs than you think and are not in ketosis.
Google this: “vegetarian keto diet in india” and maybe you’ll find something helpful.
@amwassil is right about trying to eat enough with your meals. And the usual advice is “If you’re going to have a snack make it fatty with protein if you like”. Most of us easily do that by eating meat cheese or nuts, maybe an avocado. So you know cashews are too high carb and so maybe you can get peanuts and almonds. I suppose raw coconut too.
