Hey there! Im working on my senior capstone project for my degree and as my project I am building an app around finding foods from restaurants that fit specific diets and restrictions, amongst these is Keto and Id like to get some input from the Keto community around validating this idea.

If youd be able to answer these questions for me and give any extra input it would be much appreciated! The more answered questions the better!

How do you stick to your diet when you are eating outside of home? Do you prepare your lunch for work/ school?

When you are forced to eat out (not prepared food), How do you choose what to eat and where?

Do you ever break your Keto diet and what leads to this choice?

Users could provide feedback on keto friendly businesses. Is it totally:
keto
good for low carbers
no grilled food
keto friendly veggies available
that sort of thing

Mapping would be necessary,
Accesses your phone so you can take a pic of the food, if you need to log later.
Have it linked into a food database for quick look ups of foods’ details.

I prepare and bring my own lunch to work.

When you are forced to eat out (not prepared food), How do you choose what to eat and where?
Stick to the known low carb choices, meat, cheese, salad and things I have memorized.

Do you ever break your Keto diet and what leads to this choice?
When I’ve been on track for weeks and want to.

How do you currently find new restaurants/ foods that will work with your diet?
I seldom eat out but if I’m invited for a dinner, for example, stick to meat and foods I can identify and know the carb count. Or make a choice to eat off plan altogether.

How would an app that searches for and finds Keto friendly food near you help you? Why or why not?
Honestly, I would probably not use this app. I don’t eat out enough.

Would you use this app?
I don’t think so.

What features would you like to see on this type of app?
It would be handy for the carb count of just the meat/cheese/veg of popular restaurants to be available quickly. (Does this burger contain only meat or other fillers which add carbs?)

I eat out

When you are forced to eat out (not prepared food), How do you choose what to eat and where?
Look for keto-friendly places like Chipotle, burger places, etc. Avoid Chinese and Italian

Do you ever break your Keto diet and what leads to this choice?
I’m on maintenance so I occasionally do. May be intentional choice or just social situations

How do you currently find new restaurants/ foods that will work with your diet?
I look up their menus online.

How would an app that searches for and finds Keto friendly food near you help you? Why or why not?
It would simplify my searches!

Customizable carb counts. i,e, burger w/o the bun, types of oils used

How do you stick to your diet when you are eating outside of home? Do you prepare your lunch for work/ school?

I make big batches of a meal each Sunday. I’ll eat that for dinner Sunday, and pack for work Monday thru Wednesday. Then on Wednesday evenings I usually just make a pound of ground beef seasoned with taco seasoning, which I pack for lunch Thursday and Friday. On Saturday I usually eat out, and always make sure the restaurant I choose has keto friendly options. If I’m a little hungry after I get home from work I’ll whip up some bacon and eggs or eat a handful of almonds, some pork rinds, etc.

Regarding restaurants - if I’m not familiar with the restaurant I’ll be going to, I look at the menu first and decide what I’ll eat.

See above. I usually make the decision on where to eat since I, of all my friends and family, have the most dietary restrictions.

Do you ever break your Keto diet and what leads to this choice?

Not really. If I do, it’s extremely rare and extremely limited. For example, a few weeks ago at happy hour my friend had honey old bay chicken tenders. I tried a very small piece of one, maybe less than a quarter of a tender.

How do you currently find new restaurants/ foods that will work with your diet?

Yelp!

How would an app that searches for and finds Keto friendly food near you help you? Why or why not?

It probably wouldn’t. Yelp already has a search feature for dietary restrictions like keto. Also, I’ve found that the vast majority of restaurants have low carb options by doing things like holding the bread, swapping out potatoes for salad, etc. I’ve only come across one restaurant (Hawaiian) that had a pretty difficult menu.

Would you use this app?

Probably not.

What features would you like to see on this type of app?

Would probably not use. But if I did, it would be nice to list nutritional info of the keto friendly options at the restaurant. Including customizable options, like others said. (Removing the bread, etc). McDonald’s nutrition website allows you to customize to her specific nutrition info. Select an item and choose ā€œedit ingredientsā€ to remove or add things that you want / don’t want.

I rarely eat outside of the home; but if I were to go somewhere for a day I would either prepare food at home and bring it with me. I would order a plain burger with a lettuce bun and no condiments. I have done this three times since being on Keto (twice at Wendy’s and once at McDonald’s).

The only four times I have gone a bit off course were for 2 concert nights (when I stayed Keto for my foods but had some alcohol both of those evenings), and on Mother’s Day and on my birthday, my daughters took me to a Sushi Restaurant (I ate carefully those times, but I ate Rice that was in the sushi rolls, and probably some other non Keto things that they prepared the foods with).

How do you currently find new restaurants/ foods that will work with your diet?

I think that Keto is very easy to manage at restaurants in general. One can just do Carnivore, or have a bit of low carb vegetables with the meal.

How would an app that searches for and finds Keto friendly food near you help you? Why or why not?

I do not own a cell phone so it would not make a difference to me personally, but I think that it is a great idea for others =).

I would not, as I do not own a cell phone.

What features would you like to see on this type of app?

A listing of the macros-carbs, proteins, fats and calories would be very important, as well as a list of the ingredients used in each recipe.
