Have a couple of beers, enjoy the night out and get back on the wagon again! You’ll survive and as you’ll read, there are many references of people going in and out of ketosis for many reasons - what’s s couple of days?!!!;0)
Suppose I drink 2 beers?
I’ll put my money where my mouth is-- too many good craft IPA’s in this bar, so I’ll have to sample some…
i have been in NK since early 2015, and have lost over 100 pounds and reversed my metabolic syndrome. I occasionally will have a few beers with friends or family. occasionally but less often wine or hard alcohol.
In general it doesn’t cause me problems. It is not frequent. Generally it causes me to have hunger in the am which i don’t normally have. I will eat very strict keto for the next day (eggs, bacon, avocado, olives) and usually be testing at above 0.5 mmol by the evening.
obviously drinking beer several times a week is going to be counterproductive, unless you exercise very intensely the next day, fasted.
This is good to hear, and where I hope to be eventually! Giving up my beer was the biggest mental block in me starting keto, and while it hasn’t been an issue in my first few weeks, I know there will be social situations where it will be hard not to indulge a bit.
I recently discovered Seattle dry cider, 3g carbs per pint. Much better flavor than mic ultra.
I think y’all will be glad to know that Michelob Ultra has .02 carbs per 12 ounces. So five 12 ounce beers is a single carb. And it has not thrown me out of ketosis. I guess the ‘Ultra’ means ultra low carbs. Try making a low carb michelada with hot n spicy bloody Mary mix and hot sauce, good stuff.
I just started Keto this week and agree. Giving up beer will probably be the hardest thing for me to do, especially nice craft beers.
I stand corrected, 2.6 carbs per 12 ounces. Still not bad, I like beer. But I like my bourbon and ice also. In fact, 2.6 carbs per 12 ounces is not bad. I had 2 16 oz glasses, that’s 32 ounces, around 7 carbs, hot wings and celery and bleu cheese dressing, maybe 15 carbs total, my only meal of the day. Buffalo wild wings
In ketosis you may not even finish 2 beers. Or want to. Listen to your body.
And liquor’s quicker!
I said the same thing six months ago. I can’t stand the taste of some of my former favorites now. Blasphemy, I know. I honestly can’t remember the last time I drank a beer. Bourbon, however, has become my spirit of choice.
I agree with you, John. I am an IPA lover so drinking mich ultra is equivalent to drinking water to me. I have been on the wagon since starting and unless it’s a VERY special occasion, I’m not drinking
I thought I’d never in my life say this, but there are some decent (good) wines that are pretty low carb.
I would just cultivate a preference for another form of alcohol and skip the beer. You feel grate because you are not consuming carbs which means you have already given up a wide range of foods and drinks you likely enjoyed in the past. Why go back?
Instead, I would focus on the wonderful options you can still enjoy that are free of carbs. Any distilled alcohol will work and any dry wine. There are hundreds of thousands of options that don’t involve consuming anything more then incidental carbs.
Just a bear or two … that will be OK?
Just one or two slices of pizza?
Just a few tamales at Christmas?
It was only one piece of cake on my birthday.
For myself, I know myself, it is much easier just to abandon everything with carbs and focus on all the fantastic range of healthy foods and beverages that I can still consume, foods I love.
Know yourself! Will this just be beer or two on one weekend and never again? If so why bother at all, or will it become just a beer or two every now and then, and then just a bear or two on the weekends with just a slice or two of pizza?
I am never going back to carbage and for me it is rather easy as I used to take a bag full of medications for T2D. Every time I am tempted I just remember that carbage comes with the baggage of T2D and a daily collection of medications.
If you wan’t to know if it is OK, I am certainly not going to enable you to say yes, instead I would be much more inclined to advise you to have a long hard and honest look in the mirror and assess how you have done in the past with moderating your consumptive behaviors.
It truly does not matter if a single transgression kicked you out or ketosis, what matters is what will happen in your own dietary future, what will become your habitual patters of consumption and how they will differ from the past. One eating or drinking event is of no consequence.
Keto for Life!
Most Respectfully,

I originally posted this early on in my keto journey. I’m 6 months in and I’m holding happily at the 34 lb loss mark.
The truth is that keto changes your palette and as mentioned above by another - I don’t even want beer.
I used to chug IPAs, presumably for both the buzz and the CARB LOAD. Now? Ew. No thanks. Whisky tastes GOOD and I love red wine.
And on top of that, buzzes are different. On keto I’m happy without being drunk, so 2-3 glasses of Cabernet sav and I’m happy and need nothing else (other than a nice olive and cheese spread!).
So any hardcore craft beer people, just go with this for a while. You’ll be surprised what happens to your taste. What really sucks is the loss of the social atmosphere around the craft beer (releases, talk, etc). But one could argue that isn’t the healthiest life style, lol.
Cheers!
Well said!
Knowing your self is KEY!
If you are an abstainer, you find it easier just to cut things out than to try and moderate, some can moderate successfully but it’s got to be one of the “hardest” ways to do things. I find that I must abstain from some things (sugar/flour/sweets) but I can moderate other things, like beer.
Knowing your “type” is very important for long term change.
I still have over 100 bottles of craft beer in my basement collecting dust. I can’t believe how sweet some of the higher ABV beers are now. Most anything that’s bourbon barrel aged now tastes like diabetes in a bottle…
