I hear people eating salami or ham or chorizo but when I look at those things hear in the UK I get confused. The nutritional info says low carb, less than a gram per 100g, but then when you look at the ingredients we see there is dextrose or another form of sugar or potato starch. The ingredient appears low down on the list but do I still need to be concerned?

Any help any one can give would be great.

I do homemade Salami! So good!! Can’t speak for anyone without Italian in-laws!

I assume watch out for it!

I’ve just been shopping and looked at a lot of labels myself. I am pretty sensitive to sugars so I don’t buy anything with any type of added sugar or sweetener. I laughed out loud at myself this evening because I was standing in front of a fridge and picking up a packet of cheesecake with passionfruit on top…that looked fabulous. I put it back but for me its an ongoing filter I need to keep up.
I don’t buy sausages for the same reason as I don’t buy cheesecake…sugar and insulin response and added in grain flours.

If you are metabolically healthy ie if you don’t have insulin resistance or diabetes, then it may not be a big deal but if you are wanting to be as healthy as possible and get the best food possible…don’t buy stuff with sugar or tapioca starch or anything except what you are wanting. ie…if its meat, its just meat and when you cook it you add what you want.

I was at the beach with a friend who has known me for a long time today and she said I look better than she has ever seen me. I think it is the food…I am eating really clean keto and it is having a great effect on my health and well being. Sleep like a log and no digestive issues after a few years of problems.

If you can stand to get the sweeteners and additives of all kinds out of your diet…there is a pretty fabulous pay off down the track, in my experience.

There are some people that can eat meat with sugars in and there are some people that can eat all the carbs they want and stay healthy. You just figure out what is best for you and you do that. Good luck!

In my opinion no… these sugars are in such minute quantities that they won’t have an effect… unless you find yourself eating salami by the kilo…!

One thing that I think we need to keep in mind, as we pursue this way of eating, is that most of us are coming from eating hundreds upon hundreds of carbs per day.

So coming down to less than 30 total or 20 net carbs per day is so beneficial in itself that fretting over 1 carb or less of sugar in a serving is counterproductive to the spirit of this WOE. Making yourself miserable over minutiae probably raises your stress levels and spikes your insulin higher than it would if you just swallowed the darn salami.

We need to adapt Keto into real life. Make it a journey, not just a diet.

I agree with @GentleBen. When I started LC in 1996, on busy mornings I fixed 3-4 Fiber WasaCrispbread, each with a 1/4" wedge of brie – topped with 3 slices of salami before hitting the road with my cuppa Joe or tea. Did this for hubby too - he wanted 6 Wasas.

We ate LC dinners in the evenings.

At the end of half a year I lost all 40 lbs and fit my HS clothes. He lost 60 pounds in the same time even with the fiber wasa brunch quick recipe – & he had extra salami on the side.
