Sugar in bacon?

#1

I don’t know what made me look yesterday, the bacon i buy has sugar. Then i looked at virtually all other bacons in that aisle and they all have sugar… :unamused: :unamused:
Is this why i’m stalling? I eat bacon every chance i get, morning noon and night. Where can i get bacon with sugar?

Depending on the flavor and brand, the amount of sugar in a single piece of bacon is negligible. Dietary labeling rules state that if a serving of a product has less that 0.5 gm of a macronutrient per serving, you can list it as having 0. which means if there’s actually 0.49 gm of carbs in one slice of bacon, and you have 30 slices of bacon per day, that’s 15 grams of carbs you’ve eaten that slipped under the radar. So you might want to track the bacon and count a carb per serving to be on the safe side.

You might also look into artisan butcher shops who would have custom brined bacon, order some from various online paleo butchers, or even look up how to make your own. Short of making your own, mail-order bacon is probably your best bet.

I shop at an Asian market and buy thinly sliced pork belly instead of bacon. I’ve seen a recipe to make bacon from it but I like it just fine as is.

Not sure if you have a Whole Foods grocery near you but they have a couple of brands of bacon and sausage that do not contain sugar. Pederson’s and Wellshire Farms. Also Applegate Naturals Uncured Sunday Bacon has zero sugar on the nutrition label even though cane sugar is listed (contains less than 2 %).

It’s usually more expensive to get uncured nitrate and sugar free bacon. Pork bellies can save some cash. If you’re not financially strapped, most stores now sell uncured bacon. Even oscar meyer has one, but don’t expect to get it on a discount

the simple grocer dot com

Tons of uncured, no sugar stuff. Ham, kielbasa, hot dogs, and 10 kinds of bacon

Wellshire also makes a pretty good liverwurst available at Whole Foods.

Pretty sure Aldi has some uncured bacon available now. I usually go for the regular thick cut because of price and because the sugar seems to be negligible. If it starts to be a problem, I eat a good bit of bacon, then I’ll give the uncured a shot.
